(May 6, 2005) - UC Riverside
Head Women's Tennis Coach has announced the signing of a pair
of student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Joining
the Highlander program in 2005 will be Yasaman Sakhakorn of
Saugus High School and Erynne Oki of Notre Dame High School.
"We are very happy
to have both of them joining us in the fall," Head Coach
Mark Henry said. "Both will be great additions to our
program. They are outstanding students as well as strong tennis
players.
Sakhakorn has extensive
tournament experience and has had final SCTA rankings as high
as No. 20 in the girls' 16's and No. 29 in the girls 18's.
"Yasaman will be able
to step in and make a big contribution right away," Henry
said. "She is an outstanding singles player."
Oki also brings tournament
experience and has a reputation as an exceptional doubles
player, reaching the CIF Finals in doubles in 2005.
"Oki is a very solid
player who will really help us in singles and doubles,"
Henry said.
(Oct. 7, 2005) - The UC
Riverside women's tennis team opened its 2005 fall schedule
Friday with a full day's slate at the Cal State Fullerton
Fall Intercollegiates. Six Highlanders were in action in the
singles and doubles competition with senior Casey Cross advancing
to the main draw’s round of 16.
Cross opened the day with
a morning 6-0, 6-1 victory over the host school's Jessica
Winkler. She then face Ali Borowicz of UC Irvine and again
won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Cross will face Kanykey Koicitumanova
of Cal State Northridge in the round of 16 tomorrow morning
at 11:30am.
Junior Catrisha Cabanilla
and freshman Erynne Oki were also victorious in their first
round matches, only to fall in the second round. Cabanilla
dispatched CSUN’s Natalie Siordia 6-2, 6-1, but lost
to Taylynn Snyder of Southern Cal, 6-3, 6-0. After winning
her collegiate debut, 6-3, 6-2 over Brittany Kausen of UC
Santa Barbara, Oki dropped a 6-3, 6-3 second round decision
to Koicitumanova.
Also in action for UCR were
sophomore H.R. Espiritu and freshmen Yasaman Sakhakorn and
Alex Khoury. Espiritu fought hard but lost 7-6, 6-4 to Leslie
Damion of UCSB, while Sakhakorn and Khoury went down in straight
sets to representatives from Long Beach State and Fullerton,
respectively. Espiritu, Sakhakorn, and Khoury all dropped
down to the consolation bracket, where Sakhakorn has already
advanced to the round of 16. All three will compete Saturday
morning.
In the doubles draw, Espiritu
got her revenge by teaming with Cross for an 8-4 victory over
Damion and Mio Fukushima of UCSB. They will face the USC pair
of Ashley Ellis and Whitney Peterson Saturday. Khoury and
Cabanilla teamed up but could not get out of the first round,
nor could Oki and Sakhakorn.

women's tennis team suffered a pair of losses in the main
draw of the Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiate Saturday.
UCR's Casey Cross lost in
the third round of singles play, losing to Lise Sissler, 1-6,
6-3, 6-2.
In doubles play, the team
of Cross and HR Espiritu fell to Ashley Ellis and Whitney
Peterson, 8-5.
In doubles, Erynne Oki and
Yasaman Sakhakorn won their doubles consolation match, defeating
Injejkian and Tran from Fullerton, 8-5. Oki and Sakhakorn
play in the Consolation Semi-finals Sunday at 1:00pm.

women’s tennis doubles team of Erynne Oki and Yasaman
Sakhakorn were defeated in the semifinals of the consolation
bracket Sunday at the Cal State Fullerton Fall Intercollegiates.
The freshman duo were the last remaining Highlanders after
a busy weekend of tournament action.
Oki and Sakhakorn battled
UC Santa Barbara’s Juliette Mutzke and Amy Vyhnis before
falling 9-8.
UCR next competes at the
ITA West Regional Tournament October 20-24 in San Diego.
(Oct. 20, 2005) - The Highlanders
suffered a pair of first-round losses at the ITA West Regional
Tournament at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego Thursday.
In the opening round, Ashley
Siddal of UC Irvine defeated senior Casey Cross, 4-6, 6-4,
6-4 and Jessie Rochefort of Arizona defeated sophomore H.R.
Espiritu, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Espiritu and Cross will
team up to play a doubles match on Friday at 9:00 AM against
the No. 2 seed of Fink and Vermuelen from USC, then will participate
in the singles backdraw.
(Oct. 21, 2005) - The Highlanders
earned their first win at the ITA West Regional Tournament
behind the efforts of senior Casey Cross at the Barnes Tennis
Center in San Diego Friday.
After a bye, Cross defeated
Julie Sanborn of Hawaii, 6-1, 6-0 in the second round of the
consolation bracket. She will continue to the third round
of play Saturday.
Sophomore H.R. Espiritu
lost her match to Rachel Porsz of Long Beach State, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles, Espiritu and
Cross lost to No. 2 seeded Carine Vermeulen and Amanda Fink
of USC, 8-1.

22, 2005) - Senior Casey Cross continued to move through the
back draw of the ITA West Regional at the Barnes Center in
San Diego, coming from behind to defeat Mary Constanti of
UNLV, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1.
Cross will play her third
round match at 10:00 AM Sunday.
(Oct. 23, 2005) - Pepperdine's
Eva Dickes knocked UCR senior Casey Cross out of the back
draw of the ITA West Regional at the Barnes Center in San
Diego, winning a tough 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 decision Sunday.
(Nov.
11, 2005) - Senior Casey Cross earned the Highlanders lone
singles win, while the doubles teams of Cross and Erynne Oki
and H.R. Espiritu and Eri Yoshimoto were victorious at the
UC Irvine Fall Invitational Friday.
Cross defeated Isabella
Mijic of UC Irvine, 3-6, 6-4 (10-7) in a match that went to

12, 2005) - The UC Riverside Highlanders women's tennis team
had mixed success at day two of the UC Irvine Fall Invitational
Saturday.
The Highlanders had success
against Northern Arizona University, taking two-of-three singles
matched. Bethany Brendon defeated Randall of NAU by 7-5, 7-5
scores and Alex Khoury defeated Kristin Tremain 3-6, 6-4,
6-2. Erynne Oki defeated Serena Fermin of Loyola Marymount
by default after the latter had to retire due to injury with
the score tied 4-4.
In doubles, H.R. Espiritu
and Eri Yoshimoto defeated Fermin/Kaloi of UCR, 9-8 and Khoury
and Brendon combined to beat Mills and Young of NAU, 8-1.

(Feb. 3, 2006) - The St.
Mary's Gaels won all six singles matches to post a 6-1 win
over the host UC Riverside Highlanders women's tennis at the
Student Recreation Center Tennis Courts Friday.
The Highlanders started
the day strongly, taking the doubles point behind wins by
the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams. At No. 2, the team of sophomore
H.R. Espiritu and sophomore Eri Yoshimoto deefeated Stefanie
Ordoveza and Erin Young, 8-5, while at No. 3 the team of junior
Catrisha Cabanilla and freshman Yasaman Sakhakorn held on
tho defeat Feline Charlot and Caitlin Alola, 9-8.
However, singles was another
story, as five of the six matches went just two sets. Only
sophomore Erynne Oki was able to take it to a third set, eventually
falling 6-3, 6-7, (10-4) to Kate Harden.
The Highlanders play at
UNLV Saturday.

39 ranked UNLV Rebels defeated the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders,
7-0 in a non-conference match in Las Vegas Saturday.
The Rebels had an easy time
with the Highlanders, as none of the singles matches went
more that two sets.
In doubles play, the team
of Erynne Oki and Bethany Brendan had a good battle with Sharon
Marin and Claire Smith at No. 2, but came up short, 9-7.
The Highlanders played without
their usual No. 1 singles player, Casey Cross, who suffered
a wrist injury in Friday's match against St. Mary's.

Riverside Highlanders defeated the visiting Cal Poly Pomona
Broncos, 7-0, in a non-conference match at the Student Recreation
Center Tennis Courts in Riverside Wednesday.
The Highlanders had little
trouble with the Division II Broncos, easily taking the doubles
point, then cruising to straight set wins in all six singles
matches.

freshman Yasaman Sakhakorn (Saugus, CA) and Long Beach State
sophomore Stephanie Bengson (Albion Park, NSW, Australia)
were named co-recipients of Big West Women's Tennis Athlete
of the Week as both players fared well from the No. 3 singles
position.
Sakhakorn won both of her
singles matches as well. She defeated Cal Poly Pomona's Renee
Paquillo 7-5, 6-4 as the Highlanders went on to the 7-0 team
win over the Broncos. In a 6-1 loss to No. 63 San Diego, Sakhakorn
collected the Highlanders' lone point after toppling Lauren
Perl 7-6, 7-6.
With partner Catrisha Cabanilla
at No. 3 doubles, Sakhakorn won 8-2 over the Cal Poly Pomona
duo of Erica Lin and Whitney Shryock 8-2. After moving up
to the No. 2 position, Sakhakorn and new partner H.R. Espiritu
fell 8-1 to the Torero duo of Jenny Brown and Helene Lindstrand
for the only setback of the week.
(Feb. 19, 2006) - The No.
68 ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the visiting UC
Riverside HIghlanders 6-1 in Goleta Sunday.
The Highlanders' lone win
came at No. 3 singles as Erynne Oki posted a 6-3, 6-2 win
over Andrea Pintar.

(Feb. 24, 2006) - The UC
Riverside Highlanders held on for a 4-3 win over the visiting
University of Hawaii at the Student Recreation Center Tennis
Complex Friday. The Highlanders improve to 2-5 in the season.
UCR took the doubles point
behind some fine play at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. At No. 1,
Casey Cross and Erynne Oki teamed up for a 8-4 win over Erin
Katayama and Julia Sandborn, and at No. 3 Catrisha Cabanilla
and Eri Yoshimoto bested Samanta Capella and Florence Wasco,
8-5.
The Highlanders kept up
the pace in singles play, winning the three necessary matches
in short order. Cross defeated Chloe Bihag at No. 1 , 6-4,
6-4, followed moments later by Oki's 6-2, 6-3 win over Katayama
at No. 3. They clinched the match shortly thereafter as Catrisha
Cabanilla posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Wasco.
The Highlanders return to
action on Saturday as they host Nevada.

Riverside Highlanders fell to 2-6 on the season following
a 7-0 sweep at the hands of visiting Nevada at the Student
Recreation Center Tennis Complex in Riverside Saturday.
The match was closer than
the 7-0 score would indicate, as UCR battled at both No. 2
and No. 3 doubles before succumbing.
In singles play, No. 5 Catrisha
Cabanilla battled with Bachlan Pham to three sets before falling
6-0, 2-6, 6-4. No. 4 Yasaman Sakhakorn fell in the super tiebreaker
for the second straight day, losing 3-6, 6-2, (10-4)

Riverside Highlanders dropped a 6-1 decision to visiting No.
75 Southeast Louisiana in a non-conference match at the Student
Recreation Center Tennis Complex in Riverside Saturday. UCR
falls to 2-7.
The Highlanders came within
a whisker of taking the doubles point, as the team of Casey
Cross and Eyrnne Oki posted an 8-3 win at No. 1 over Brenda
Kovac and Nina Knavs. At No. 2, H.R. Espiritu and Yasaman
Sakhakorn battled overtime before falling, and the No. 3 team
of Bethany Brendon and Eri Yoshimoto fell at No. 3, 8-5.
UCR got its only win of
the evening at No. 4 as Espirtu defeated Jana Simurkova, 3-6,
6-3, (10-4). At No. 1, Cross went to the super tiebreaker
before falling to Kovac, 3-6, 7-5 (11-9).

Riverside Highlanders overcame a slow start to defeat the
visiting UNC Greensboro Spartans, 6-1 in a non-conference
match at the Student Recreation Center Tennis Complex in Riverside
Saturday. UCR improves to 3-7.
The Highlanders lost the
doubles point with a 2-1 decision. Casey Cross and Erynne
Oki posted a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles, but that was all the
Highlanders could get as the Spartans took the early lead.
UNCG challenged the Highlanders
in each of the first singles sets, but UCR overpowered the
visitors, sweeping all six singles matches with little difficulty.

women's tennis team defeated UC Riverside, 4-3 in a Big West
contest at the Student Recreation Center Tennis Courts in
Riverside Sunday.
With the win, the Tigers
moved to 9-4 on the season and 1-1 in Big West Conference
play, while the Highlanders fell to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in
conference.
After winning the doubles
point, 2-1, the Tigers and Highlanders split the singles matches,
three of which went three sets. The Highlanders got wins from
No. 2 Yasaman Sakhakorn, No. 4 H.R. Espiritu and No. 6 Eri
Yoshimoto. But Pacifc's Carla Tamborini held on to defat Erynne
Oki 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 3 and Helen Schneider won a thriller
over Catrisha Cabanilla, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6.

Riverside Highlanders had no problem with the visiting Providence
Friars, posting a 7-0 win in the non-conference meet at the
Student Recreation Center Tennis Courts Tuesday.
The Highlanders cruised
through the doubles matches to earn the point, then, lost
just 11 sets in the singles matches en route to the sweep.
Sophomore H.R. Espiritu had the easiest time of the afternoon,
cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ashley Rissolo of Providence.
Casey Cross and Erynne Oki also played well, losing just one
set each.
With her two wins, Cross
has now 101 match wins (total singles and doubles) in her
UCR career. She is second only to former Highlander Michelle
Beyronneau (103).

Center. The Highlanders fall to 4-9 on the season.
ETSU came out strong in
doubles, taking all three matches by identical 8-4 scores.
The Highlanders mounted a rally by winning two of the top
three singles matches. Senior Casey Cross defeated Masha Ilina
5-7, 6-3, (10-8) and sophomore H.R. Espiritu downed Sandie
Knight 6-3, 6-1.
The Highlanders could not
overcome the Lady Buccaneers’ bottom three, however,
as ETSU took the match.
UCR remains at home to
play Long Beach State on Friday at 2 p.m.

(April 13, 2006) - The visiting
Cal State Fullerton Titans posted a 4-3 win over the host
UC Riverside Highlanders in a Big West Conference tennis match
at the Student Recreation Center Tennis Courts in Riverside
Thursday.
UCR fell to 5-13 overall
and 0-5 in the Big West. Cal State Fullerton is now 5-15.
The match came down to the
No. 1 singles battle between UCR's Casey Cross and Fullerton's
Gina Lee. Cross won the opener, 6-4, but Lee came back to
win game two, 6-3. With the other matches finished, all eyes
were on the No. 1 court, and the Fullerton fans went home
happy as Le pulled out the victory with a 6-2 win.
UCR won the doubles point
as Cross and Eyrnne Oki posted a 9-8 win over Ruya Inalpulat
and Le at No. 1, and H.R. Espiritu and Colette Chau defeated
Cheyenne Inglis and Mai-Ly Tran, 8-3 at No. 3.
With the exception of No.
1 singles, all the matches went just two sets, with UCR getting
wins from No. 3 Oki, who defeated Tran 6-2, 6-2, and No. 4
Espiritu, who defeated Inglis, 7-5, 6-0.

LBSU won the doubles point
as No. 1 doubles, Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks, who are
ranked No. 30 nationally, won 8-5 over Casey Cross and Erynne
Oki. At No. 2 doubles, Sandra Rocha and Katy Williams won
8-5 overCatrisha Cabanilla and Yasaman Sakhakorn. Long Beach
closed out the point as Stephanie Bengson and Rachael Porsz
won at No. 3 singles over Colette Chau and H.R. Espiritu,

In singles action the 49ers
won all six matches, five in straight sets. Grady, ranked
No. 58 nationally, won at No. 1 singles 7-5, 6-2 over Cross
while Williams prevailed at the No. 2 spot 7-5, 6-1 over Sakhakorn.
Bengson won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles over Oki and Rocha came
back from a set down at four singles to win 6-7, 6-3, 12-10.
Weeks prevailed at No. 5 singles 7-6 (2), 6-3 over Cabanilla
and Porsz won at the six spot 6-1, 6-2 over Bethany Brendon.
The Highlanders travel to
face UC Irvine at Irvine on April 19 at 1:30 PM. They will
face Long Beach State in the first round of the Big West Championships
at Indian Wells on April 27th.

49 UC Irvine women's tennis team defeated UC Riverside 6-1
Wednesday afternoon in Big West Conference play at Anteater
Tennis Stadium.
The Anteaters are now 12-9
overall and 5-2 in the Big West. UCR fell to 5-15, 0-7.
The Anteaters swept the
three doubles matches to take the point. In singles play,
UCR senior Casey Cross pulled off an upset with a 6-3, 6-2
win over #114 Becky Bernhard at No. 1 singles, but that was
the lone highlight for the Highlanders, who lost the remainder
of their singles matches in straight sets.
UCR will face Long Beach
State in the first round of the Big West Championships at
Indian Wells on April 27th at 9:00 AM.

(April 21, 2006) - The UC
Riverside Highlanders Women’s Tennis Team (5-15, 0-7)
will open the Big West Tournament on Friday, April 28th against
No. 1 seed and 27th ranked Long Beach State University at
the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, CA.
The Highlanders’
Opponent
The No. 27 ranked Long Beach State women have claimed
three of the last four Big West Tournament titles. The 49ers
went 7-0 in Big West play and finished the regular season
18-4 overall to position themselves as the No. 1 seed.
Other Matches Include
No. 2 seed UC Irvine, ranked No. 49 in the country,
battles No. 7 seed Cal State Fullerton in another 9:00 a.m.
match. The Friday afternoon matches, which both begin at 3:00
p.m., feature No. 3 seed Cal Poly against sixth-seeded Pacific
and fourth-seeded UC Santa Barbara versus No. 5 Cal State
Northridge. The Gauchos are ranked No. 65 and the Mustangs
No. 69 nationally. Both women’s semifinal matches take
place on Saturday, April 29 at 9:00 a.m. The championship
match on Sunday, April 30 is slated for 9:00 a.m.
Cross Becomes All-Time
Wins Leader
With her win at No. 1 doubles at Cal State Fullerton
on April 13, senior Casey Cross passed former teammate and
current Assistant Coach Michelle Beyronneau in career doubles
wins with her 48th and total wins (singles and doubles) with
104. Beyronneau concluded her career with 47 and 103, respectivly.
With her singles win against UC Irvine on April 19, Cross
became the UCR career singles wins leader with 58. She enters
the Big West Tournament with 106 career wins (48 doubles,
58 singles).
New Kids Stepping
Up
Freshmen Erynne Oki and Yasaman Sakhakorn have showed
little problem making the adjustment to collegiate tennis.
Oki, 11-15 overall, has played every where from No. 1 to No.
4, but has had the greatest success at No. 3, where she is
6-7. Sakhakorn, 7-18 overall, has played better the higher
she has been in the lineup, posting a 4-7 mark at No.2 singles,
2-2 at No. 3 singles and 0-5 at No. 4 singles.
Mix and Match
The Highlanders have used 19 different doubles combinations
this season, including 14 in dual match play. Of those 14,
UCR has only used two different teams at No. 1 doubles, but
nine different teams at No. 3 doubles.

Mark Henry is in his 13th season at UC Riverside,
and his 11th as the women’s head coach. He has a career
mark of 82-130 in that span as a women’s coach.
(April 19, 2006) - Long
Beach State defeated UC Riverside by a 4-0 score in a quarterfinal
match to improve to 19-4 on the season. The Highlanders finished
their season at 5-16.

defeated Yasaman Sakhakorn and Catrisha Cabanilla 8-0. LBSU

and Rachel Porsz topped H.R. Espiritu and Colette Chau 8-2.
In singles, LBSU lost just
a combined three games to roll to the 4-0 victory. Hannah
Grady won 6-0, 6-0 over Casey Cross at No. 1 and Sandra Rocha
beat Catrisha Cabanilla at No. 2 by the same score. Katy Williams
closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Yasaman
Sakhakorn in the No. 4 spot. Long Beach State will play the
winner of the No. 4 UC Santa Barbara-No. 5 Cal State Northridge
match in the semifinals on Saturday, April 29.

senior Casey Cross was named Big West Honorable Mention in
singles Tuesday. Cross, a native of Rancho Mirage, CA, was
12-14 overall, including 6-11 in dual matches and 6-3 in tournament
play for the Highlanders. She played all 17 matches at No.
1, despite suffering a wrist injury that made it very painful
to strike the two handed backhand.
Cross concludes her UCR
career as the all-time leader in singles wins with 58 and
total career wins with 106.
