(April 19, 2005) - The UC
Riverside Highlanders' women's tennis team will face a bit
of a mystery as they take on the University of Idaho in the
first round of the Big West Championship tournament at Indian
Wells Thursday.
The Highlanders (8-11, 2-6)
are the seventh seed in the tournament and face the No. 10
Vandals (6-5, 0-0) at 3:00 PM on Thursday. The mystery lies
in whether the Vandals are better than their No. 10 seeding.
Big West rules do not force teams to play each other during
the regular season, and as such Idaho has not played a Big
West opponent this year and are coming off of wins at Gonzaga
and Eastren Washington last weekend. In fact, this weeks'
trip will mark the teams' first foray outside the Washington-Idaho-Montana
area.
The teams have played one
common opponent, Montana. UCR defeated Montana 4-3 on March
21, while Idaho defeated them 5-2 on March 12.
For the Highlanders, the
No. 7 seed is the best in the program's history. They are led
by senior Michelle Beyronneau, who has an 18-13 record this
season, including an 11-8 mark in dual matches. Junior Casey
Cross is 14-12 overall and 11-7 in dual matches, and freshman
H.R. Espiritu is 15-10 overall and a team best 13-6 in dual
matches.

winner over Catrisha Cabanilla and Leopold downed Eri Yoshimoto
6-1, 6-0. Fielding posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Colette
Chau.

suspended upon completion of the match. No. 1 player Michelle
