UC Riverside Women's Tennis Signs Casey Cross to NLI

(April 24, 2002) - The University of California Riverside women's tennis team signed Palm Desert High School senior Casey Cross to a National Letter of Intent, Coach Mark Henry announced Wednesday.

The Palm Desert native is currently ranked No. 20 by the Southern California Tennis Association.

"We are excited to have Casey joining our program," Henry said. " She is going to have a big impact on our program. She has a very well rounded game."

Cross is a three-year letter winner in tennis and also plays softball for the Aztecs. She helped her team to three Desert Valley League championships and earned All-DVL honors.

UCR Opens Season at Fullerton

(October 18-20, 2002) - Freshman Casey Cross won the consolation singles at the Cal State Fullerton Fall Tournament as the Highlanders kicked off the 2002-03 season.

Cross fell to Kristina Boss (UCI) 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the first round of the tournament but went on to defeat Dehlia Feliz (CPP) 8-3, Jessica Nesamony (UCI) 8-5, Kristen Grady (CP) 8-0, Ashkey Maddocks (UCSB) 8-6, and Hui Leow (UCI) 8-5 in the finals.

Michelle Beyronneau defeated Crystal Holt (LMU) 6-0, 6-0, Ioana Sisoe (CSF) 6-0, 6-1, and Samantha Waller (CP) 6-0, 6-3, but fell to Laura Thomas (LBSU) 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the fourth round.

Beyronneau/Cross were also impressive in doubles, advancing to round two after a withdrawal by Tranckino/Wyrembak (UCI) in the first round, then defeated Marvel/Argumedo 8-1, and Grady/Lewis (UCSB) 8-4, Pintar/Damion (UCSB) 8-5 until falling in the doubles championship to Hustedt/Romm (CP) 9-7.

Kelly Takeshita fell to Danielle Hustedt (CP) 6-3, 6-1 in the first round, but came back to defeat Amy Vyhnis (UCSB) 8-2, Katie Zobrist (SUU) 9-7, and Andee Durant (SUU) 8-2 but fell to Leow (UCI) 8-1 in the fourth round of consolation singles.

In doubles, CarolynMitchell/Takeshita defeated Butterwick/Dillon (UCSB) 8-3 but then fell in round two against Rocha/Inapulat of CSF 8-2.

Colette Chau lost to Olga Yepremian (CSN) 6-2, 6-4 in the first round, but came back to defeat Priscilla DeVera (CPP) before losing to Chelsy Thompson (CP) 8-3.

Caitlin Blashaw and Kristina Shuster withdrew in their respective first round matches.Shuster/Blashaw withdrew from their doubes match.

UCR Competes at West Regional in San Diego

(October 25, 2002) - The UC Riverside Highlanders women's tennis team is competing in the Omni Hotels West Region Women's Championship in San Diego, CA.

Michelle Beyronneau (UCR) and Kelly Takeshita (UCR) both qualified for the main draw, however Beyronneau fell to Katalina Romero (SDSU) 6-2, 6-3 while Takeshita lost to Tereza Simonyan (CSUN) 6-1, 6-1. In the consolation bracket, Takeshita lost to Patricia Graf )SDSU) 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-4 while Beyronneau defeated Polina Kravets (Hawaii) 6-2, 6-3 but then fell to LeentjieOosthuizen (UNLV) 8-3.

The doubles team of Beyronneau/Caitlin Blashaw defeated Gyorgyi Zsiros/Oosthuizen (UNLV) 8-2 but fell in round two against Charlotte Vernaz/Veronica Koksova (PEP) 8-1.

Highlanders Sign Kim Tran to NLI

(January 7, 2003) - Kim T. Tran of Mater Dei High School has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of California Riverside, UCR Head Coach Mark Henry announced Tuesday.

“We are very happy to have signed Kim to a scholarship for next fall,” Henry said. “She is an aggressive baseliner with a good serve and lots of potential for her game to continue to improve. She will immediately help the depth of the team. She is a very bright young lady and will fit in nicely.”

Tran will graduate from Mater Dei in the spring. While attending Pacifica High School she was Garden Grove League Singles Champion in 1999 and 2000. She was Serra League Singles Champion in 2001 and advanced to the CIF semi-finals in 2001. The 5-5 right-hander was ranked #37 in SCTA girls 16's in 2001.

Highlanders Defeat Portland State in Spring Opener, 6-1

(January 19, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders posted a win in their first match of the season, defeating Portland State, 6-1.

The Highlanders swept the doubles and had went to three sets in just one of their five singles wins.

"It was a good opener for us, and it allowed us to see the team in action before we take on Northridge," Coach Mark Henry said.

Highlanders Defeat Vanguard, 6-1

(January 28, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders earned their second win of the season Tuesday, defeating Vanguard University, 6-1.

"We got off to a slow start in several of the matches, but came back and played more consistently as the matches went along," Head Coach Mark Henry said.

The Highlanders were without No. 1 Michelle Beyronneau, who skipped the match after suffering an arm injury against Portland State last week. Vanguard played with just five players due to eligibility issues.

Highlanders Fall to Northridge, 7-0

(Feb. 1, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders women's tennis team lost to the visiting Cal State Northridge Matadors, 7-0 at the Student Rec Center Courts Saturday.

The Highlanders won the No. 1 doubles as Michelle Beyronneau and Casey Cross defeated Tereza Simonyan and Inga Chilingaryan, 8-3. However, UCR fell in the other two doubles matches, losing the point.

In singles play, Cross playing at No. 1 went three sets with Simonyan, but fell 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Cal Poly Pomona Edges UCR, 4-3

(Feb. 4, 2003) - Cal Poly Pomona's Michelle Hammond rallied to win her number two singles match and give the Broncos a 4-3 win over UC Riverside Tuesday.

The Highlanders (2-2) won the doulbes point as Michelle Beyronneau and Casey Cross defeatd Dehlia Feliz and Michelle Rabinovich, 8-3 and Kelley Takeshita and Carloyn Mitchell posted an 8-2 win over Sara Jex and Katrina Holmberg.

Takeshita and Lindsay Litvinoff won singles matches for the Highlanders, with Takeshita defeating Feliz, 7-5, 6-3 and Litvinoff winning 7-6, 6-2. However, Hammond's 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win pushed the match in the Broncos favor.

(Feb. 15, 2003) - The University of San Francisco Dons lost the doubles point, but swept the first four single matches to take a 4-1 decision against the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

The Highlanders (2-4) got doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The team of Michelle Beyronneau and Casey Cross defeated Gabi Ruiz and Anna Skogerboe, 8-4, while the team of Kristina Schuster and Lindsay Litvinoff defeated Michelle Duncan and Courtney Chung, 8-2.

In singles play, USF took the No.2, 4,5, and 6 matches, clinching the win. The remaining matches were called shortly thereafter due to rain.

UOP Slips Past UCR, 4-3

(Feb. 16, 2003) - The University of the Pacific earned a pair of hard-fought singles wins to help clinch a 4-3 win over the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders in Stockton Sunday. The loss dropped UCR to 2-5 on the season. They were 0-3 on their roadtrip to Northern California.

The Highlanders (2-4) won the doubles point as the No. 2 and 3 teams were victorious. Kelly Takeshita and Carolyn Mitchell defeated Natalia Kostenko and Jessica Beauchene, 9-7, while Kristina Schuster and Lindsay Olivine defeated Jaimee Bremner and Lisa Lester, 8-4.

The singles matches were much more even, as three went to three sets. UCR's Michelle Beyronneau won the No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 win over Katharina Heil and Schuster won No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Beauchene.

However, the Highlanders could not get the elusive third win to give them the match. Casey Cross went three sets before falling to Viktoria Hizo, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 2 and Miranda Lagac fell in three to Bremner, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

(Feb. 21, 2003) - The No. 18 ranked UNLV women's tennis team lost just one set en route to a 7-0 win over the visiting UC Riverside Highlanders at the Fertitia Tennis Complex in Las Vegas Friday.

UNLV moved to 3-1 on the season, while the Highlanders fell to 2-6.

The best match of the day was the No. 2 singles, in which No. 120 player Gyorgyi Zsiros rallied to force a tiebreaker over UCR's Casey Cross.

UCR Beats SJSU, 5-2

(Feb. 22, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders snapped a five match losing streak with a 5-2 win over San Jose State University in a match played at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Fertitia Tennis Complex Saturday.

The Highlanders moved to 3-6 with the win.

UCR took the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. In No. 2, Kelley Takeshita and Carolyn Mitchell defeated Coral Silverstone and Anna Vasu, 9-7, while the No. 3 team of Lindsay Litvinoff and Kristina Schuster defeated Elke Harms and Kathy Van, 8-2.

The Highlanders won four singles matches. No. 1 Michelle Beyronneau defeated Ana Lukner, 6-2, 3-0, with the latter retiring. No. 2 Casey Cross defeated Silverstone, 6-4, 6-3, while Mitchell defeated Harms 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 4 spot. Kristina Schuster wrapped up the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.

(Feb. 23, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders finished their three match weekend set with a 2-1 record as they defeated Southern Utah 7-0 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Fertitia Tennis Complex Sunday. On Friday the Highlanders lost to UNLV, but bounced back to defeat SJSU on Saturday.

The Highlanders moved to 4-6 with the win.

UCR swept the doubles matches to take the doubles point. Michelle Beyronneau and Casey Cross posted a shutout in their match, defeating Katie Zobrist and Andee Durrant, 8-0. Carolyn Mitchell and Kelley Takeshita won at No. 2, 8-2, over Mandie Walker and Crystal Holt. The No. 3 team of Kristina Schuster and Lindsay Litvinoff won by default.

In singles play, Beyronneau cruised over Zobrist, 6-1, 6-0 and Cross posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Durrant. No. 3 Mitchell defeated Walker, 6-0, 6-3. Match with UCI Postponed

(Feb. 27, 2003) - Today's scheduled match between UC Riverside and UC Irvine has been postponed due to the weather.

The courts at Riverside are wet from the week of rain and with more on the way, both coaches decided to reschedue and set a tentative date of April 16 at 2:00 PM.

(Mar. 4, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders defeated the University of Pittsburgh 5-2 at the Student Recreation Center Tennis Courts on Tuesday.

The Highlanders moved to 5-6 with the win.

UCR swept the doubles matches to take the doubles point. Michelle Beyronneau and Casey Cross defeated Jill Williams and Laura Pegula, 8-2. Carolyn Mitchell and Kelley Takeshita won at No. 2, 9-8, over Niki Borza and Haley Hughes. The No. 3 team of Kristina Schuster and Lindsay Litvinoff defeated E. Hughes and Jena Fiore, 8-5.

In singles play, Beyronneau won a tough three-setter over Williams 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 and Cross posted a 7-6, 7-6 win over Borza. The Highlanders finished the match as Mitchell won at No. 4 over Becky Emmers 6-2, 6-3, and No. 6 Shuster defeated Fiore, 6-0, 6-3.

(Mar. 7, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders won a pair of singles matches an one doubles match, but fell to Hawaii 5-2 at Student Recreation Center Tennis Courts on Friday.

With the loss, the Highlanders fell to 5-7.

UCR won the No. 1 doubles behind Michelle Beyronneau and Casey Cross, who defeated Renata Camango and Justine Boutet 8-0, but couldn't pull out a second match to take the point.

In singles play, Cross capped an undefeated day with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Stacy Hakekawa and Carolyn Mitchell won at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3 over Paige Marrion. However, Hawaii swept the other four matches in two sets each to take the win.

(Mar. 8, 2003) - The 49er women’s tennis team won its fifth consecutive match with an easy 7-0 win over UC Riverside on Saturday afternoon at the 49er Campus Courts. The 49ers, ranked #64 in the country this week, improve to 6-4 overall and are 4-0 vs. Big West Conference opponents this year. With the loss, UCR fell to 5-8.

Highlanders Fall to Colorado State, 6-1

(Mar. 11, 2003) - The Highlanders fell to 5-9 with a 6-1 loss to Colorado State at the UCR Tennis Courts Tuesday.

The Highlanders' lone win came ag No.4 singles as Miranda Lagac defeated Tatyana Ugorich, 6-1, 6-4. UCR had two great battles an No. 2 and No. 3 singles, as No. 2 Casey Cross fell to Dasha Zhurin 6-4, 6-7 (10-7) and Carolyn Mitchell lost to Alexandra Paganetti, 4-6, 6-3, (10-7).

Highlanders Defeat Gonzaga, 5-2

(Mar. 12, 2003) - The Highlanders improved to 6-9 with a 5-2 win over Gonzaga University at the UCR Tennis Courts Tuesday.

The Highlanders earned the doubles point winning two of the three matches. Michelle Beyronneau and Casey Cross downed Jamie Buterbaugh and Aaryn Volkmann 8-6 in the No. 1 match while Lindsay Litvinoff and Kristina Schuster secured the doubles point defeating Sirrah Williams and Connie Head 8-2.

In singles action Riverside won the first two matches when Beyronneau defeated Buterbaugh 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 slot while Cross downed Bates 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 action. Rock forced a third set before Lagac took the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the fourth match while Schuster defeated Williams 6-2, 6-1 in the fifth spot.

Highlanders Fall to Idaho State, 5-2

(Mar. 24, 2003) - The Highlanders dropped a 5-2 decsion to Idaho State at the UCI Spring Invite Tuesday.

UCR won a doubles point as Kristina Schuster and Lindsay Litvinoff won the No. 3 doubles. Casey Cross was the only singles winner, posting a 7-6, 5-7, (11-9) decision. The Highlanders return to action on Tuesday as they take on Portland State at 8:30 AM in Irvine.

Highlanders Defeat Portland, 4-3

(Mar. 25, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders took two of three doubles matches, then held on in singles to defeat the University of Portland 4-3 at the UC Irvine Spring Invitational Tuesday.

In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Michelle Beyroneau and Casey Cross defeated Amy Juppenlatz and Sanja Indic, 8-2, and the No.3 team of Kristina Schuster and Lindsay Litvinoff defeated Kelle Menke and Deirdre Ring-Marrinson, 8-2.

In singles play, Miranda Lagac was victorious at No. 4, defeating Alyson Tyson, 6-0, 6-2, and Schuster defeate Menke 6-1, 7-5. But the match came down to the No. 3 singles battle between Carolyn Mitchell and Indic. Indic took the first set, 3-6, but Mitchell rallied to win the next two, 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the match for UCR.

Highlanders Return Home, Defeat Redlands, 6-1

(April 2, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders returned home after three straight road matches and defeated the visiting University of Redlands 6-1 at the UCR Recreation Center Wednesday.

The Highlanders took two-of-three doubles matches, as Michelle Beyronneau and Casey Cross defeated Tatiana Steinberg and Molly Shih 8-0 at No. 1, and Kelley Takeshita and Carolyn Mitchell defeated Erin Hiranaga and Jenna Umeno 8-6 at No. 2.

The Highlanders took the first five singles matches, as Beyronneau, Cross, Takeshita, Mitchell and Miranda Lagac were all victorious.

Cal Poly Shuts Out Highlanders, 7-0

(April 4, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders dropped an entertaining, yet frustrating match to Big West opponent Cal Poly, 7-0 on a windy and cold afternoon UCR Recreation Center Friday. With the loss the Highlanders fell to 8-11.

The Mustangs swept the Highlanders in doubles play, but UCR came out strong in singles play before falling. The most best match of the day was at No. 1 between Michelle Beyronneau of UCR and Danielle Hustedt of Cal Poly. Beyronneau took the opener, 6-4, but Hustedt came back to win 6-1 in the second set to send it to a super tie breaker. Hustedt outbattled Beyronneau, 10-6 to clinch the sweep for the Mustangs.

Highlanders Fall to UCSB, 6-1

(April 6, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders fell to UC Santa Barbara in Goleta Sunday. The Highlanders fell 8-12.

The Highlanders lost the doubles point, but won at No. 3 doubles as Kristina Schuster and Lindsay Litvinoff combined for a 9-8 win over Jen Kuhle an Chelsea Dillon. Schuster also posted the Highlanders' only win in singles play, winning at No. 6, 7-5, 6-4.

Highlanders Defeat CS Fullerton For First Big West Win

(April 9, 2003) - The UC Riverside posted their first ever Big West win with a 4-3 decision over Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton.

The Highlanders lost the doubles point, though Michelle Beyronneau and Casey Cross won at No. 1 with a 9-8 decision.

In singles play the Highlanders won at No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 to take the match. Beyronneau defeated Ruya Inapualay 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, and Cross defeated Adriana Hockicko 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2. Kelly Takeshita defeated Brittany Minna at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2, and Kristina Schuster was victorious at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2 over Jessica Martin.

The Highlanders moved to 9-12 overall and 1-5 against Big West opponents.

Highlanders Lose to UCI, 5-2

(April 16, 2003) - The UC Riverside Highlanders dropped a 5-2 decision to visiting UC Irvine in a makeup of a February 27th match that was rained out.

The Anteaters won the doubles point, sweeping the three matches. Michelle Beyronneau and Casey Cross dropped a tough 8-6 match to Jenny Bowman and Tiffany Chang and Kelly Takeshita and Miranda Lagac lost to Anna Bentzer and Christine Posner, 8-5.

The Highlanders quest to overcome the deficit was hurt when No.6 singles player Kristina Schuster had to retire due to injury with opponent Nikki Fermin leading 6-5 in the first. The Anteaters then took the No. 2, 3, 5 and the afforementioned 6 to clinch the match. The Highlanders won at No. 1 as Beyronneau defeated Chang 6-2, 3-6 (10-5) and Carloyn Mitchell defeated Amy Tranckino, 2-6, 6-4 (10-0).

The Highlanders moved to 9-13 overall and 1-6 against Big West opponents.

Utah State Defeats UCR 4-2 at Big West Tournament

(April 24, 2003) - Danville, CA - The Utah State Aggies posted a 4-2 win over the UC Riverside Highlanders in the first round of the rain-delayed Big West Conference Tournament Thursday. The match was called after the singles play.

UCR got wins at No. 2 and No. 6. Casey Cross posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Carolyn Larsen, and Lindsay Litvinoff earned the win at No. 6 with a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Haley Hawkins. The Highlanders had two matches go the distance but came up short in each, as Michelle Beyronneau lost at No.1 to Caroline Pollock, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 and Kelley Takeshita fell at No. 3 to Lindsey Bennion, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.

The Highlanders moved to 9-14 overall and 1-7 against Big West opponents. Weather permitting, they will play Friday against either Cal State Fullerton or Idaho, with the match slated to begin at 6:00 PM.

Beyronneau, Cross Earn All-Conference Honors

(April 30, 2003) - UCR sophomore Michelle Beyronneau was named second team All-Big West and the doubles team of Beyronneau and freshman Casey Cross received second team honors Wednesday.

Beyronneau spent the entire season at No. 1 for UCR, posting a 13-13 overall mark and a 9-10 record in dual matches.
