Highlanders Producing A Solid Spring Season

UC Riverside has produced a 3-2-1 record so far in the 2008 Spring season.

(Apr. 14, 2008) – The UC Riverside women’s soccer team finished the first part of their spring season with wins over Azusa Pacific and Cal State San Bernardino played at Cal State Fullerton. The two wins give the Highlanders a mark of 3-2-1 as the break off for finals and spring break.

The spring began for UCR on February 23rd in San Diego as they took part in the University of San Diego’s spring tournament. Participants included Pepperdine, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, USD, and the defending national champion USC Trojans. Conditions were soggy, as the Highlanders took on USD in the first match of the day. Despite playing well, head coach Veronica O’Brien’s team could not get a result and dropped the match 1-0.

The team returned to action later in the day to take on Big West opponent CSUF. While the weather let up, the Highlanders did not by putting three goals on the defending conference champion to earn the victory and move on to the tournament final against Pepperdine. The teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation before deciding the winner on penalty kicks. Six rounds of free kicks were needed before UCR finally finished off the Waves. Goalkeeper Brittany Goetz made three spectacular saves in the round to help Riverside win the event.

UCR returned to action March 2nd as they played host to the Women’s Professional Soccer League team, AJAX. The game marked the return of UCR alumni Renee Scachetti to the newly completed Highlander stadium. Both teams battled each other as well as the windy conditions. UCR surrendered two goals, finishing with a strong flurry of shots but could not get past the stingy AJAX defense and dropped a 2-0 decision.

The Highlanders concluded their first part of the spring season with a date against Azusa Pacific and CSUSB on March 15. The Highlanders came out strong in both games and produced identical 2-0 wins.
