(April
10, 2008) – The Big West Conference awarded UC Riverside’s
Brenda Martinez with her second Athlete of the Week award
of the season after she ran a personal-best and broke the
school-record in the 1500m run at the Stanford Invitational
held last Saturday.
Martinez ran a personal-best time of 4:19.81 to finish fourth
in the race and also qualify for the NCAA regional. Her time
is currently the second-best in the West Region and the sixth-best
in the nation. Martinez just missed the “B” standard
for qualifying for the US Olympic Trials.
Brenda becomes the first Big West Female Track athlete to
pick up the weekly award twice this season after she was recognized
following her national-best, school-record setting, and NCAA
regional qualifying performance in the 5000m in early March.
The
UCR Men's and Women's Track teams next compete in the Rafer
Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational at UCLA from April
10-12.
