(April
7, 2008) – UCR sophomore Brenda
Martinez set a Highlander record in the women's 1500m
over the weekend at the Stanford
Invitational – one of the biggest annual track meets
of the season featuring collegiate and high school teams from
around the nation. Martinez' time of 4:19.81 was the fourth
fastest of the day and broke the school mark of 4:21.18 which
she set on March 31, 2007. It also places her in the top ten
in the nation in the 1500m.
"The race did not go out fast like we had hoped,"
said Highlander Track and Field Coach Irv
Ray. "It started really slow and everyone kind of
waited for someone else to take the pace. Nonetheless Brenda
stayed near the front of the race and finished well after
falling back a few spots. it's a weird feeling for us as coaches
to be somewhat disappointed with a 4:19 race effort."
Junior
Uchechi

with a time of 61.32. Other top finishers in the invitational
included Lauren

Lewis who finished second (18' 10.75") and third
(18' 7.75") in the women's long jump and the women's
4x400m team of Egeonuigwe, Ashley
Williams, TreAna
Hundley and Tajma
Stephenson who finished third with a time of 3:46.18.
