(March 16,
2008) – UC Riverside used a three-run fifth inning and
a complete-game shutout by sophomore starting pitcher Marissa
Alvidrez to pick up a 4-0 win over Sacred Heart in their final
game at the Saint Mary's Invitational Sunday Afternoon. The
Highlanders improve to 12-18 on the season.
Alvidrez (3-5)
fired her second complete game of the season after striking
out four and scattering seven hits to pick up the win. Senior
leftfielder Roni Yee and freshman third baseman Brooke Hebenton
each recorded two hits for UCR.
Freshman Taylor
Thomas gave the Highlanders a 1-0 lead after her two-out base-hit
up the middle brought home junior first baseman Katie Curtis
in the Riverside fourth inning.
UCR erupted
for three runs in the fifth with Hebenton starting the big
inning with a double to lead off the inning. Senior right
fielder April Murray beat out an infield single one batter
later to bring Hebenton across for a 2-0 Highlander lead.
Yee followed Murray with an infield single of her own to set
up first and second for Alvidrez. She smoked a base-hit to
center, bringing home Murray from second to give UCR a 3-0
lead and also advancing Yee to third. Curtis then squeezed
home Yee on the very next play to put the Highlanders up 4-0.
That was all
Alvidrez needed, as she allowed only two baserunners in the
final three innings to earn the win for UCR.
The Highlanders
will have a week off for finals before traveling to play California
and Santa Clara on March 25th and 26th.
