(March 15,
2008) – UC Riverside picked up a 8-2 win over Sacred
Heart in the second day of the Saint Mary’s Invitational
in Moraga, CA Saturday afternoon. UCR (11-18) dropped their
first game of the day, 4-3 to Saint Mary’s but banged
out 10 hits in their win against SHU later in the day.
Senior starting
pitcher Christin Songer (4-5) struck out six and allowed only
two earned runs to pick up the complete game victory against
Sacred Heart. Freshman third baseman Brooke Hebenton launched
her first career home run and junior centerfielder Tiana Towns
along with senior second baseman April Murray each collected
two hits for the Highlanders.
UCR jumped
out to a 7-0 lead after three innings, producing a two-run
first and five-run third in support of Songer who allowed
only one hit in the first five innings. Junior first baseman
Katie Curtis brought home the first Riverside run with a sac
fly in the first and senior catcher Cassie Greenawalt singled
home the second run of the inning for an early 2-0 lead.
The Highlanders
broke it open in the third as Towns opened the scoring with
a two-out single down the left field line and Hebenton followed
one batter later with her three-run shot over the centerfield
fence to put UCR up 7-0.
Songer hit
a little bump in the road in the sixth as Sacred Heart brought
two runs across with three hits but she escaped further damage
by striking out the final batter to end the inning. UCR tacked
on one more run in the seventh to pick up the 8-2 win.
UCR dropped their first game of the day 4-3 to Saint Mary’s,
despite receiving a 3-for-3 effort at the plate from sophomore
designated player Marissa Alvidrez who blasted her team-leading
seventh homer of season in the second.
After surrendering
the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, the Highlanders
nearly pulled off the comeback after putting two runners on
in their half of the seventh. Caitlin Marsh singled with one
out to start the rally and Amanda Klimczak walked to set up
first and second. Saint Mary’s picked the win after
getti9ng the next two UCR hitters to ground out and hold on
for the one-run victory.
Junior starting
pitcher Stephanie Marshall (2-7) took the loss for the Highlanders
after allowing four earned runs and 13hits in her complete-game
effort.
