– Sophomore Marissa Alvidrez hammered a three-run homer
in the bottom of the sixth inning to give UC Riverside (8-14)
a 3-0 win over Buffalo (1-10) in the Amy S. Harrison Classic
hosted by UCR Friday afternoon.
Neither team
could get anything going offensively as each starting pitcher
continued to fill up the strike zone and allowed their respective
defenses to make the plays. UCR senior starter Christin Songer
produced her best performance of the season, limiting Buffalo
to just three hits while striking out seven.
Buffalo starter
Stephanie Visperas pitched just as well, holding the Highlander
offense to four hits on the game but made one mistake to UCR's
leading hitter in Alvidrez.
Junior centerfielder
Krystal Marquez led off the Riverside sixth with a walk and
freshman Kameryn Hebenton then earned another walk to set
up first and second and nobody out for the top of the order.
Senior leftfielder Roni Yee then sacrificed both runners up
into scoring position. Senior right fielder April Murray followed
with a sharply hit grounder up the middle but the Buffalo
second baseman made a nice play on the ball, not allowing
Marquez to come home for the go-ahead run.
That brought
Alvidrez to the plate who had already doubled to right center
back in the first inning. With the count 1-2, Alvidrez fought
off a good pitch from Visperas, just barely catching a piece
of a pitch on the outside corner to foul it off and keep the
at-bat alive. Alvidrez didn’t wave at the next pitch
though, hammering her fifth blast of the season over the left
field fence to bring home Marquez and Hebenton for a UCR 3-0
lead.
Songer (3-4)
struck out the side after allowing a lead-off single in the
seventh to close out the win for the Highlanders and record
her first complete-game shutout of the season.
In earlier
Amy S. Harrison Classic action, Utah Valley State beat Buffalo
6-5 in eight innings and Iowa no-hit Utah Valley state on
their way to picking up the 6-0 win.
UCR will play
Utah Valley State at 9:00 a.m. and Iowa at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
