- UC Riverside picked up a 4-2 win over UTEP to earn a split
in their second day at the UTEP tournament in El Paso, TX
after playing well in a 4-1 loss to Loyola Marymount earlier
in the day. Junior Stephanie Marshall struck out three in
her complete effort and freshman Meghan Stone launched her
first career homer as the Highlanders improved to 6-13 on
the season.
An RBI single
from senior Kristie Martinez started the Highlander fourth
inning and two batters later Stone smacked a two-out two-run
homer to put UCR up 3-0. The Highlanders added another run
in the fifth after sophomore Marissa Alvidrez brought home
junior Tiana Towns with a RBI single to add to the Riverside
lead, 4-0.
UTEP pushed
two runs across in the sixth but Marshall (2-4) ended the
rally by striking out the final batter in the inning to keep
the score at 4-2. She then sat the Miners down in the seventh
to pick up her second win of the season and give UCR their
second win of the tournament.
In the Highlanders
first game of the day against LMU, the Lions used a three-run
second inning to take a 3-0 lead. UCR answered with one an
inning later on a Martinez RBI single to score freshman Kameryn
Hebenton from third to cut the Loyola lead to 3-1 after three
complete innings.
LMU then answered
with a run in the fourth and went on to hold the Riverside
offense scoreless the rest of the way to pick the 4-1 win.
Alvidrez (0-4) suffered the loss despite striking out three
in her complete-game effort.
UCR wraps up play in the UTEP tournament
with a game against Binghamton at 9 a.m. (MST).
