(February 29,
2008) - UC Riverside beat Northern Colorado 9-7 and dropped
a 8-4 decision to Georgetown in their frist two games at the
UTEP tournament in El Paso, TX Friday afternoon. Senior Kristie
Martinez and junior Amanda Klimczak each launched home runs
in the opener and senior Christin Songer struck out a season-high
eight in her game-two effort.
UCR (5-12) put up three runs in each
of the first two innings highlighted by a first-inning two-run
shot from Martinez. The Highlanders picked up their runs in
the second on a freshman Kameryn Hebenton RBI double, a UNC
error and wild pitch to own a 6-0 lead after two.
The Bears cut the Highlander lead to
6-4 with four runs in the third. But UCR would put the game
away in the sixth with another three spot after Klimcazk led
off the ininng with her first homer of the season. Freshman
Taylor Thomas added an RBI single and Hebenton gave UCR their
ninth run with an RBI groundout.
Klimczak earned the in and sophomore
Marissa Alvidrez picked up her first career save after stiking
out three in her 4.2 innings of relief.
In game two against Georgetown, senior
Roni Yee gave UCR an early 1-0 lead with a two out RBI triple
to left-center in the second that scored Hebenton from first.
The Highlanders went up 2-0 after Alvirez hammered her third
home run of the season to lead off the Riverside fifth.
The lady Hoyas then took advantage of
two UCR errors that opened the door for GU. Georgetown put
up eight runs in the innings, ruining a strong outing that
had been thrown by Songer who left after 5.2 innings with
the score at 7-2.
The Highlanders made a small rally in
their half of the seventh, getting RBI's from juniors Tiana
Towns and Krystal Marquez but Georgetown held on for the 8-4
win. Songer suffered the loss after striking out eight batters
and only two of the eight runs that came across were earned.
Alvidrez finished the day with four hits
and Martinez had three.
UCR continues to play at the UTEP tournament
with games against Loyola Marymount and UTEP on Saturday.
