(February 27,
2008) - UC Riverside held their own in a doubleheader dropping
both games 2-0 and 6-0 to 15th ranked Hawaii at Amy S. Harrison
Field Wednesday afternoon. Freshman Taylor Thomas finished
the day with four hits including a 3-for-3 effort in game
two for the Highlanders (4-11). Sophomore game one starter
Marissa Alvidrez limited the nationally ranked Hawaii (10-2)
squad to just four hits and one earned run.
In the opener,
both teams played relatively clean games before Hawaii picked
up a run in the fourth after a Highlander error allowed Tanisha
Milca to score and put UH up 1-0. UCR would bang out seven
hits in the game but failed to bring any runners across and
take advantage of a solid pitching performance from Alvidrez
(0-3) who struck out four in her complete game effort.
In game two,
again, UCR hung with the Super Regional participant from a
year ago, playing to a scoreless tie after four innings. Hawaii
then erupted for four runs in the fifth, using four hits highlighted
by a two run single from Clare Warwick to take a 4-0 with
just two innings to go. UH tacked on a couple more runs late
and went on to pick up the 6-0 victory.
The Highlanders
were not able to get to Hawaii starter Kate Robinson who limited
UCR to five hits and walked only one to pick the victory.
Riverside junior starter Stephanie Marshall (1-4) pitched
well early before allowing the four runs late to suffer the
loss.
UCR travels
out to play in the UTEP tournament in El Paso, TX.
