(February 26,
2008) - UC Riverside took both games of their doubleheader
with Eastern Michigan, 6-2 and 1-0, at Amy S. Harrison Field
Tuesday afternoon. Senior Christin Songer struck out five
in her complete-game effort in the opener and sophomore Marissa
Alvidrez launched a sixth-inning solo homer to give the Highlanders
(4-9) a game two win.
UCR erupted
for five first-inning runs on in game one, receiving RBI doubles
from Alvidrez and freshman Taylor Thomas, and RBI singles
from senior Cassie Greenawalt and freshman Brooke Hebenton.
The Highlanders banged out seven hits in the inning, including
two by senior Roni Yee as UCR battled around to take 5-0 lead.
Songer (2-4)
attacked the zone throughout the game and never faced any
real EMU threats, allowing only five hits and walking just
one Eagle batter. Yee finished with three hits and Alvidrez
and junior Katie Curtis each added two hits in support of
Songer's team-leading third complete-game effort of the season.
Game two produced
a pitchers duel as both teams combined for only two hits after
four innings, both were by the Highlanders. UCR junior starter
Amanda Klimczak was just as impressive as Songer, striking
out four and allowing only three hits to pick up her first
win as a Highlander after transferring from Boston College.
Both teams were unable to capitalize on opportunities to score
in the middle innings and the game seemed to be waiting for
somebody from either side to get a swing. That game-changing
swing came from Alvidrez, who hammered a 2-2 pitch deep over
the right-centerfield fence to lead off the Highlander sixth
and break the scoreless tie.
Klimczak would
make that 1-0 lead stand, getting the final batter to line
out to senior third baseman Kristie Martinez to preserve the
second UCR win of the day.
The Highlanders
return to action on Wednesday, hosting #15 Hawaii for a double
header at Amy S. Harrison Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
