| (May
13, 2008) - The Big West Conference announced Tuesday that
UC Riverside sophomore Marissa Alvidrez and senior Christin
Songer earned All-Conference honors for their efforts this
season.
Songer
was named to the All-Big West Second Team as a pitcher after
finishing conference play with a 1.81 earned run average -
third best in the Big West - and all five Highlanders conference
wins to her credit - sixth best in the league. Opposing Big
West hitters hit just .247 off of Songer on the year. She
concluded her career at UCR as the team's all-time Division
I leader in wins and strikeouts.
Alvidrez
was named to the All-Big West First Team as a utility player
and to the Second Team as a DP after a season that saw her
pace the conference in batting average (.424) and slugging
percentage (.722) while finishing second in on base percentage
(.517) and OPS (1.239) and third in homeruns (11). Her batting
average is good enough for 22nd in the nation, her on base
percentage is 17th and her slugging percentage is 38th. Her
11 homeruns set a UC Riverside single-season record, and Alvidrez
already ranks second on the Highlanders' career home run list.
