4-4 Effort With 4 RBI Leads The Way In 8-0 Win
Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score
(May
9, 2008) - It took them a little longer than they probably
anticipated but after several near misses the 2008 UC Riverside
softball team (19-36, 5-15) can finally claim the title of
Best Highlanders team in the Division I era. Cassie
Greenawalt went 4-for-4 with 4 RBI in UCR's 8-0 win over
Cal Poly in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader giving the Highlanders
five Big West wins on the year and guaranteeing them the best
conference winning percentage in the seven-year D-1 history
of the program.
Since winning four of five conference games in mid-April,
the Highlanders had dropped eight straight in the Big West
including five one-run losses. The eight runs are the most
runs scored by the Highlanders since an 8-7 win over Santa
Clara on March 26 of this year.
Christin Songer
(10-10) got the start for the Highlanders
and threw her 13th complete game of the season and her fifth
shutout allowing just four hits and five total base runners
on the day.
UCR went in order in the first inning, but threatened in the
second leaving the bases full. They finally broke through
in the third scoring four runs in the inning on just one hit.
Veronica "Roni" Yee got things started with a one-out
walk. After the Mustangs issued an intentional walk to Marissa
Alvidrez, they plunked Kristie Martinez
to load the bases
and allowed two runs to score on an error by the pitcher.
Greenawalt followed shortly thereafter with an RBI single
that plated two additional runs.
Greenawalt led off the Highlanders half of the sixth with
a homerun to make it 5-0, and UC Riverside scored three more
in the seventh to end the scoring.
Alvidrez took to the circle in Game 2 for UCR and allowed
just five hits in her five-and-two-thirds innings of work,
but one of those hits was a fourth-inning leadoff triple which
was brought home two batter later on a sacrifice fly. It was
the only run that Cal Poly needed as Mustangs starter Helen
Pena allowed just four hits on the evening in the 1-0 shutout
win.
The final game of the regular season for both clubs is scheduled
for Saturday, May 10 at noon.
Notes With the win in Game 1 of the doubleheader,
the Highlanders tied the school record for Big West Conference
wins in a season with 5. The win also guarantees UCR of its
best conference winning percentage in its seven years competing
at the Division I level.
Greenawalt's 4 hits and 4 RBI in Game 1 are the most by a
Highlander since Alvidrez went 4-for-4 with 4 RBI against
Santa Clara on March 26 of this year.
