(May
4, 2008) - UC Riverside sophomore Marissa
Alvidrez smacked her school-record 11th home run of the
season Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough for the Highlanders
to take the series finale from Cal State Northridge as they
fell 2-1. It was the fifth one-run loss for UCR (18-35, 4-14)
in their last six defeats.
It was Senior Day for the Highlanders at Amy S Harrison Field
as they celebrated the careers of catcher Cassie Greenawalt,
left fielder
Veronica "Roni" Yee, right fielder
April Murray
, third baseman Kristie Martinez
and pitcher Christin
Songer.
Songer took to the circle in the first for the 23rd time this
season in search of her 10th win of the year. She gave up
a run in the opening frame thanks to two two-out hits sandwiched
around a walk, but Alvidrez quickly evened the score with
a solo shot in the Highlanders half of the first.
Cal State Northridge pushed a second run across in the top
of the third, once again as part of a two-out rally. Songer
retired the side in order in the fourth and the fifth and
got out of a sixth inning jam to hold the Matadors in check.
Unfortunately, Cal State Northridge starter Mercedes Lovato
was even more effective allowing just one hit after Alvidrez'
homer.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the Highlanders half of the seventh,
Taylor Thomas
knocked a one-out single to left off of a reliever
Amanda Pitzenberger, but a double-play grounder ended the
game. Songer falls to 9-10 on the year while Lovato improves
to 17-13.
UCR finishes up its 2008 season this weekend with a three-game
series at Cal Poly.
