(April
26, 2008) - The UC Riverside softball team (18-31, 4-10) traveled
to 17th ranked Long Beach State University Saturday afternoon,
dropping two tightly contested one-run decisions to the 49ers,
2-1 and 4-3.
Amanda Klimczak
got the start in game one for the Highlanders
drawing the unenviable assignment of going against Long Beach
State's Brooke Turner – she of the 0.68 era and the
21-4 record. But Klimczak matched Turner pitch for pitch throughout
much of the game giving up just one run on three hits through
six innings. Turner also limited the Highlanders to three
hits and one run – an RBI single off Cassie Greenawalt's
bat that scored Veronica
"Roni" Yee.
Turner continued to dominate the UC Riverside bats in the
seventh retiring them in order. Kilmczak came out for her
seventh inning of work trying to send the game into extra
innings, but a single, and a walk put runners on first and
second with one out. Brooke LeSage's single scored Jessica
Beaver with the winning run.
Christin Songer
took to the circle in game two and found herself
down 2-1 after the first inning before finding her groove
retiring the 49ers in order in the second and allowing a single
baserunner in the third. In the meantime, Marissa Alvidrez,
whose last homer came on April 6, drilled a Bridgette Pagano
offering over the leftfield fence scoring Yee and giving the
Highlanders a 3-2 advantage. The homerun was Alvidrez' 10th
of the season tying the school record originally set by Melissa
Sanchez in 2006.
Songer couldn't hold on to the lead, however, as Lacy Tyler
led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and Pagano
followed with a two-run homer to left. That score held up
into the seventh as the Highlanders mounted a final rally
in the top half of the inning. Alvidrez reached second with
one out on a two-base error by 49ers leftfielder Tyler, but
Pagano struck out Katie Curtis
and Greenawalt to end the game.
UCR and Long Beach State square off again on Sunday, April
27 for a single game beginning at 1 p.m. PT.
