Martinez' drilled a solo homer helping to start a Highlander
rally in the sixth which ultimately fell short as UCR
dropped a 7-4 decision to UC Davis |
Box Score
(April
20, 2008) - The UC Riverside softball team (18-27, 4-8) lost
the final game of a three-game Big West Conference series
with UC Davis on Sunday and is currently tied for seventh
in the Big West with Pacific.
Senior pitcher
Christin Songer had her streak of consecutive
scoreless innings snapped at 21 in the first inning as a defensive
miscue and two long balls staked the Aggies to a 5-0 lead
before the third out was recorded. After the second home run,
Amanda Klimczak
relieved Songer and closed out the inning.
The Highlanders got one run back in the second on an RBI double
by Krystal Marquez
that scored
Cassie Greenawalt, but UC Davis
picked up two more in the bottom half of the inning to make
it a 7-1 game.
Klimczak settled down after the second, but Aggies starter
Jessica Hancock continued to overmatch the Highlanders allowing
just three base runners over the next three innings.
Kristie
Martinez finally got to Hancock leading off the top of the
sixth with a home run, her fourth of the season, over the
left centerfield wall.
A
Katie Curtis walk, a passed ball and a Greenawalt walk chased
Hancock from the game, and Alex Holmes entered the contest
with nobody out and runners on first and second. A wild pitch
advanced both runners one base, and
Tricia Adgar worked a
walk to load the bases for Marquez. A passed ball advanced
all three runners, scoring
Milana Johnson who was pinch running
for Curtis.
Marquez grounded out to shortstop, but neither runner was
able to advance. The next batter,
Kameryn Hebenton, also grounded
out to short, but Greenawalt was able to come home on the
play and Adgar advanced to third.
April Murray worked a walk,
but pinch hitter
Brooke Hebenton grounded out to third to
end the rally.
The Aggies went down in order in the bottom of the sixth,
and the Highlanders went to work with just three outs left
in regulation. The first three batters of the inning (Marissa
Alvidrez, Martinez and Curtis) all reached base for UCR bringing
the winning run to the plate with nobody out. UC Davis brought
Hancock back into the game and she picked up three consecutive
outs on a fielder's choice, a strikeout and a pop up to close
out the game.
The Highlanders next face Cal State Bakersfield in a non-conference
doubleheader on Thursday at Amy S Harrison Field beginning
at 1 p.m. before traveling to Long Beach State for a three-game
conference series over the weekend.
