Songer threw 14 shutout innings this weekend, striking
out 15 and allowng just 8 hits in earning the Big West
Conference Pitcher of the Week award |

14, 2008) - The Big West Conference today named UC Riverside
senior Christin
Songer the Big West Conference Softball Pitcher of the
Week. Songer took home the award following 14 innings of shutout
softball over the weekend, striking out 15 and allowing just
eight base hits in leading the Highlanders (17-25, 3-6) to
a two-to-one series win over Pacific. It was UCR's first conference
softball series win since the 2003 season.
In
winning the award, Songer becomes just the second player in
Highlanders history to be named Big West Pitcher of the Week
- Stephanie Marshall
earned the honor for the week ending
February 13, 2006.
In
Game 1 of UCR's Saturday double-header with the Tigers, Songer
allowed just three hits and struck out a career-high 10 batters
in the 2-0 win. For an encore in Sunday's rubber match, she
allowed just five hits while striking out five in a 4-0 victory.
No Pacific runners advanced past second base on the afternoon.
Songer
is the Highlanders top pitcher on the year pacing the team
in appearances (20), starts (16), innings pitched (98.0),
earned run average (3.50) and strikeouts (73). She is tied
for fourth place on UC Riverside's career wins chart (29)
and is second in career strikeouts (272).
Next
up for the Highlanders is a three-game Big West road series
this weekend at UC Davis (19-22, 3-6). The Saturday, April
19 doubleheader begins at noon as does the Sunday, April 20
series finale.
