(April 12, 2008) - The UC Riverside softball team (16-25, 2-6) picked up its second straight conference win Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader with Pacific (22-24, 4-4). Christin Songer (7-5) pitched a complete-game three-hitter in the 2-0 win striking out 10. Pacific took game two of the three-game series 5-1. The rubber match is scheduled for Sunday at UCR's Amy S. Harrison Field at noon.

The Highlanders were without leading hitter Marissa Alvidrez (.448 avg, 522 obp, 767 slg) for all but one at bat on the day as she was hit in the left hand with a pitch during her first trip to the plate and did not return.

Despite scoring chances on both sides of the ledger, Game 1 remained scoreless until the UCR half of the fifth. Roni Yee walked to begin the inning and advanced to second on a Brooke Hebenton sac bunt. Kristie Martinez followed with a fly ball to left field that bounced off Lindsey Pierce's glove for an error, scoring Yee. Tricia Adgar pinch ran for Martinez and was brought home moments later on a Taylor Thomas single.

Songer retired the Tigers in order in the top of the sixth, and nailed down the win in the seventh allowing just a two-out walk. With the win Songer is now alone in fifth place on the Highlanders career win chart with 28. Her 10 strikeouts on the day raise her career total to 267, 45 off the school mark of 312 set from 1999-2002 by Monique Baeza.

Stephanie Marshall took to the circle in Game 2 for UCR, but was unable get out of the third inning. She allowed three hits and two walks in two-and-one-third innings as Pacific plated three in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Amanda Klimczak came on in relief and kept the Tigers in check through the sixth, but the Highlanders managed just a lone run in the fifth along the way. In the seventh, Pacific tacked on two insurance runs to earn a split of the doubleheader with a 5-1 win.

Notes: If UCR wins on Sunday, it will be the third conference series win in the Highlanders' Big West history. They last won a series back on May 3-4, 2003 when they won both games of a May 3 doubleheader at Utah State. Their other Big West series win came on May 4-5, 2002 when they completed a three-game home sweep of Sacramento State.

The Highlanders last won three conference games in a season back in 2005 when they finished 3-18.
