(July 8, 2006) - Donald
and Anne Skotty, of Silver Mountain Land & Minerals
LP, have established the William G. Skotty Endowed Golf
Fund to support UCR Golf scholarships, Director of Athletics
Stan Morrison announced Monday.
 |
The Skotty Fund will
provide a four-year scholarship for a member of either
the men’s or women’s golf teams, and have
alternating four-year cycles between the teams.
"This is an extraordinarily generous gift that will
benefit student-athletes for years to come," Morrison
said. "It will be a fitting tribute to Mr. Skotty,
who was an avid golfer who embraced the value and benefits
of higher education."
According to his nephew, Donald Skotty, William G. Skotty
was a distinguished World War II veteran whose passion
for golf was kindled with weekly miniature golf outings
in Los Angeles. An avid “duffer” he was a
long-time member of the Travelers Golf Association, playing
local courses at least once a week. The elder Skotty attended
Riverside Polytechnic High School, where he played baseball,
then was active in community softball leagues. He was
married to former UCR employee Patricia Skotty, who is
an active member of the UC Riverside Retirees Association.
He passed away at the age of 82 in January, 2006.
"It is a tremendous gift, and it is going to really
help us," UCR Head Coach Paul Hjulberg said. "This
donation will grant the opportunity for a young person
to pursue their collegiate degree. For that, we are grateful
to the Skotty family."
The gift is the third named, endowed scholarship since
the program's move to the Division I level. The minimum
contribution for a named scholarship endowment for UCR
Athletics is $150,000.
Additional contributions may be made to the William G.
Skotty Endowed Golf Fund by contacting Assistant Athletics
Director Julie Hall at (951) 827-6289 or via email Julie.Hall@ucr.edu.
(August
14, 2006) -LPGA star Annika Sorenstam will headline
"A Highlander Day on the Greens," a fundraiser
for UC Riverside men's and women's golf on Monday, September
18, 2006 at the world famous BIGHORN Golf Club in Palm
Desert.
Sorenstam, the LPGA's
all-time leading money winner who boasts 68 tournament
wins in her career, will conduct a clinic for UCR guests.
Groups will then go out to play a round on the prestigious
Canyons Course with members of the UCR golf teams before
returning to the clubhouse for the closing program.
Monies raised from
the event will support student-athlete scholarships
and provide team travel funding for UCR's men's and
women's golf programs.
"To have the
top ranked female golfer on the LPGA tour support UC
Riverside men's and women's golf is a tremendous honor,"
UCR Men's and Women's Golf Head Coach Paul Hjulberg
said. "This event is an excellent opportunity for
us to have our supporters get to know our student-athletes
better while experiencing a once in a lifetime clinic."
"For my teams
to be nationally competitive takes external resources.
Private funding is more important than ever to enable
us to recruit the best players and travel to play against
the best competition in the country. This event will
directly support our efforts to accomplish both of those
goals," Hjulberg added.
Attendance at this exclusive event is limited, however
a few spots remain open. Individuals interested in participating
can contact Assistant Athletics Director Julie Hall
at 951-827-6289. The cost to participate begins at $1,500
per person.
In her career, Sorenstam
has won 10 major tournaments and won at least five tournaments
per year from 2000 to 2005. She has won eight Rolex
Player of the Year awards and has won the Vare Trophy,
given to the LPGA player with the lowest scoring average
for the year, six times.
Located in the hills
of the Santa Rosa Mountains in Palm Desert, BIGHORN
Golf Club features two of the most internationally acclaimed
golf courses, the Arthur Hills-design Mountains course
and the Tom Fazio-designed Canyons Course. The Canyons
Course was recognized by Desert Golf Magazine as the
No. 1 private golf course in the southwest and features
mountain views, canyons, colorful wildflowers, palm
trees, rippling streams and waterfalls to create an
unparalleled golfing experience. Events played at BIGHORN
include the Battle at BIGHORN, the US Senior Match Play
Challenge and the Skins Game (1992-95). The course will
host the Samsung World Championship in October.

- University of California, Riverside Athletics Director
Stan Morrison announced several personnel moves in
advance of the 2006-07 school year Tuesday.
• Cliff Dochterman
has been named senior associate director of athletics.
His new duties will include overseeing the internal
affairs of the athletics department, including game
and event supervision and management. Dochterman will
continue to oversee special events such as the Braveheart
Auction and Food Festival.
Dochterman joined
UC Riverside as associate athletics director in 1996
and has been one of the primary architects of UC Riverside's
move to NCAA Division I, spearheading the lobbying
efforts to gain entry into the Big West Conference.
Julie Hall, who
was hired in January as an assistant athletics director
for development, will assume responsibility for the
department's annual fund drive in the spring as well
as continuing to build a major gifts fundraising program
and increasing private support to meet the financial
requirements for UCR to succeed at the Division I
level.
"Having Cliff
take over the internal affairs role is an important
development for the continued growth of this department,"
Morrison said. "Having a proven development administrator
like Julie Hall, who can shoulder our fund raising
efforts, helps to make this change possible."
• Ross French
has been named assistant athletics director for Media
Relations. French has been at UCR since the spring
of 2000. His duties include media and public relations,
media guide publication, overseeing the department
web site, and game management.
• Maggie Kimberly
will move from her position as travel coordinator
to business office administrative assistant responsible
for payroll and purchasing. She will also train her
successor in the travel coordinator position. A search
for that position is ongoing.
• Meagan Peckham
has been hired as an athletics trainer. Peckham completed
a graduate assistant position at San Diego State University.
She holds a bachelors' degree in physical education
with an athletic training concentration from Endicott
College, graduating in 2003, and got her master's
degree in kinesiology with a concentration in biomechanics
from San Diego State in 2006.
• The search
for the position of Executive Associate Director of
Athletics is ongoing and is expected to be concluded
in the fall. The appointee will replace Paula Smith,
who left UCR in July to take a similar position at
UC Irvine.
(Oct. 10, 2006) -
The University of California, Riverside announced that
men’s soccer senior student-athlete Erasmo Solorzano
has been declared academically ineligible for the remainder
of this season and that the University will self-report
the violation to the NCAA.
The administrative
error was discovered by the Athletics Department during
an Academic Progress Rate (APR) update on Friday, October
6, 2006. Solorzano was declared ineligible when it was
discovered that he is two units short of the necessary
108 under the NCAA's "Progress Towards Degree"
rule. Additionally, it was discovered that he was three
units short of the necessary 72 following his sophomore
year.
The oversight was self-reported to the Big West Conference
on Friday and UCR will submit a self-report of the violation
to the NCAA following the completion of an internal
review. Additional sanctions from the Big West and the
NCAA, including the forfeiture of games in which Solorzano
played during the 2005 and 2006 school years, are possible.
The "Progress
Towards Degree" rule, of which the "40-60-80
rule" is a part, states that a student-athlete
who is entering his or her third year of collegiate
enrollment must have completed at least 40 percent of
the course requirements in their specific degree program
to maintain eligibility. The requirement is 60 percent
completion entering the fourth year and 80 percent completion
entering the fifth year.
"Erasmo Solorzano
has been caught up in this unfortunate oversight. The
young man committed no offense, did nothing wrong. He
was a student-athlete in good standing working hard
towards his degree," Director of Athletics Stan
Morrison said. "Every conceivable effort is being
made to correct the system that allowed this oversight
to occur."
"Our concern
is also for this fine young man. We will focus on ensuring
his continued academic progress at UCR," Morrison
added.
(Oct. 11, 2006) -

(Nov.
1, 2006) - Veteran athletics administrator Janet Lucas
has been hired as the executive associate athletics
director at UC Riverside following a nationwide search,
Director of Athletics Stan Morrison announced Wednesday.
Lucas joins UCR
from Cal State Northridge, where she had worked the
last three years as the senior associate athletic
director and senior woman administrator. She was the
interim athletics director at Northridge from August
2005 to August 2006.
"I have had
the privilege of working in the Big West Conference
with Janet Lucas in several capacities over the past
few years and I have always been impressed with her
breadth of knowledge and professionalism," Morrison
said. "She is a tireless worker who values student-athletes,
coaches and institutions of higher education. UCR
is fortunate to have her joining our athletics program
in such a critical leadership role. She brings skills
and strengths that will simply add to the administration
of our entire department. We welcome Janet with open
arms and great anticipation."
In her new role,
Lucas will be the athletics departments' second in
command behind Morrison, and will serve as a member
of the department's senior staff management team.
Her responsibilities will include serving as the university's
senior woman administrator to the Big West and NCAA,
assisting with the day-to-day operations of the athletics
department, serving on various NCAA, Big West and
campus committees, serving as the point person on
all Athletics Progress Rate issues and directly supervising
the sports of volleyball, softball, men's and women's
soccer, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's
golf, and monitoring and ensuring department progress
in completing NCAA Certification action plans.
"I am truly
honored to become a part of the UC Riverside community,"
Lucas said. "As one of the finest research institutions
in the nation, its values concerning the relationship
between academics and athletics are priorities I share.
I look forward to joining Chancellor Cordova, Mr.
Morrison, the faculty, and the athletics coaches and
staff in the efforts to continue the development of
an integrated and quality student-athlete experience
that embraces and fosters academic, athletic, and
personal success."
While at Northridge,
Lucas supervised the internal operations of the athletics
department, including all sport supervision and support
services. She helped guide the department through
a period of tremendous change and achievement and
worked to enhance the program's visibility and external
operations.
She previously spent
15 years at James Madison University in Harrisonburg,
VA, reaching the position of senior associate director
of athletics/senior woman administrator prior to heading
west to Northridge in 2004.
Lucas earned her
bachelor of science degree from Wake Forest University,
graduating cum laude in physical education. She received
her master of sports administration from Ohio University
in 1980 and shortly thereafter began her career in
collegiate athletics administration with an internship
at Baylor University. She joined the University of
Maine as the assistant athletic business manager and
ticket manager in 1981 and was eventually promoted
to the position of assistant director of athletics
for finance/senior woman administrator in 1988.
Lucas, who will
start on Monday, December 4th, 2006, succeeds Paula
Smith, who left the university in August to take a
similar job at UC Irvine.
(Nov. 14, 2006)

- UC Riverside Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry
and Biomedical Sciences Anthony Norman will serve
as chairman of the committee that will select the
next UC Riverside Men's Basketball Coach, it was
announced Wednesday.
Norman, who has
served as the faculty athletics representative to
the NCAA since 1996, was appointed as chair of the
committee by Chancellor France Córdova. Norman
then selected the members of the committee. They
are:
• Vice Chancellor
of Administration Al Diaz
• Athletics Director Stan Morrison
• Executive Associate Atheltics Director and
Senior Woman Administrator Janet Lucas
• Head Women's Basketball Coach John Margaritis
"There was
a tremendous amount of interest in participating
on this committee, both from people on campus and
by our friends in the community," Norman said.
"I believed it was best to keep the committee
itself fairly small due to the logistics of scheduling,
but we will certainly seek our student-athletes'
input into the process and hope to have opportunities
for the public to meet and interact with our finalists
as circumstances permit."
Norman said that
the university has received over 100 inquiries and
over 70 applications for the position. The committee
will begin vetting candidates immediately and plans
to begin interviews in the next seven to ten days.
"It is difficult
to put a hard and fast timeline in place, but we
do have some milestones in mind," Norman said.
"We want to move quickly on this, but not so
quickly as to overlook any candidates."

• With all these roles, it is a wonder she has
time to attend class or play soccer. But she does
both, majoring in interdisciplinary studies/business
with a minor in philosophy, and on the field starting
all 18 games for the Highlanders, registering
an assist.
A new award for the 2007-08 school year,
the best teammate award is given to the individual
whose efforts both on and off the field best exemplify
the concepts and ideals of teamwork.
Senior softball player Hailey Marshall was the
inaugural honoree, based upon her outstanding
career on and off the field with the Highlander
softball team. Throughout her career, whether
on the field, or on the bench, in practice or
the weight room, in class or out, she was the
same spirited person. When she was in the game,
you would hear her constant chatter from the middle
infield. In the dugout, she was always standing
up on the bench, cheering, and keeping the team's
energy up.
Despite never entering a season as the starter,
she played significantly throughout her career,
taking advantage of the opportunities given to
her. When injuries to teammates gave her the chance
to play, she was grateful. When she came out of
the line-up, she thanked her coach for the opportunity
and said "Do whatever you need to do to help us
win. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to
play today."
Off the field she was a leader, helping teammates
through challenging times. She wrote a "Student-Athlete
Diary" for the UCR website, helping to show the
world what it was like to be a student-athlete.
She even put together a highlight video for the
team to enjoy after the final game.
Her Head Coach Connie Miner said, "In my 26 years,
I have never seen a player understand what being
a team player is and means, and to do it at such
a high level as she does. She is in a league of
her own. She will make you understand or remember,
and reassure you, why we do what we do as coaches
and administrators. If is for young people just
like her."
There were several outstanding performances
by female student-athletes during the 2006-07
season, but the performance of junior basketball
player Kemie Nkele stood tall. Literally.
On the basketball
floor, she started 32 games, averaging 16.1 points
and 8.7 rebounds per game. She shot 45% from the
field, 73% from the free throw line and 34.7%
from the three point line. She scored double-figures
in points in 27 games. She was named the 2007
Big West Conference Player of the Year, the Big
West Conference Tournament MVP for the second
year in a row, and to the All-Tournament team
for the third year in a row. She is a three-time
Big West first-team honoree. She reached the 1,000
point career milestone on December 6, 2006, scoring
24 points and playing 39 minutes despite having
a badly sprained ankle.
"She is a great leader and she leads by example,"
said her Head Coach, John Margaritis. "She will
ask questions when she already knows the answer
because she knows that her teammates do not know
the answer. I feel that Kemie was God's gift to
me. I got a chance to coach and God gave me Kemie
so I can win."
The 2007 Male Student-Athlete of the Year
was a fairly simple choice as junior right hander
James Simmons was the only nominee. However, he
received multiple nominations for the award. Simmons'
statistics tell the tale. He finished his season
with the UCR baseball team at 11-3 with a 2.40
ERA. He struck out 116 batters in 123.2 innings
of work while walking just 15. He won seven of
his first eight decisions, and capped his season
with 7.1 innings of work against Nebraska in the
Highlanders' win over the Cornhuskers at the NCAA
Regionals in Tempe.
He earned third team honors on the Collegiate
Baseball 2007 TPX All-American team, was awarded
Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year and first
team all-conference. He collected Big West Pitcher
of the Week honors a school record three times
this season, on February 19 and back-to-back weeks
April 2 and April 9. Simmons was also named the
InsidePitching.com West Region Pitcher of the
Week twice this season and once was named Collegiate
Baseball Louisville Slugger National Player of
the Week. He remains a top-30 finalist for the
Brooks Wallace Award, which recognizes the National
Player of the Year, and also a top-50 finalist
for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award. He became
the third pitcher in the school’s Division I history
to win at least 10 games in a season and the first
since 2003.
The Braveheart Award is the highest award
given to a student-athlete, coach or staff member
at UC Riverside. It is named after the Scottish
freedom fighter, William Wallace, whose nickname
was "Braveheart" and who exploits were dramatized
in the movie of the same name. The Braveheart
Award is given annually to the individuals who
have demonstrated exemplary courage over the current
school year.
Certified Athletic Trainer Heidi Von Arx was the
first honoree, having shown extraordinary courage
as she dealt with a potentially life threatening
illness, eventually undergoing surgery.She never
missed a beat at work, and her smile and outstanding
work ethic were on display for all to see. After
the surgery, she was right back at work, taking
care of her student-athletes in soccer and softball.
Throughout her personally trying time, she never
lost her professional edge, handling several medical
issues that were above and beyond the standard
call of duty. She spent a great deal of her personal
time to assist with the needs of her student-athletes.
For many, being appointed a head coach
is a dream come true. But for Vonn Webb, the thrill
of being a head coach was tempered by tragedy
in the form of injuries, illness and death. When
then-Head Coach David Spencer was sidelined by
an illness, this man stepped up into the position
of interim head coach and never missed a beat.
He was a leader in practice and on the sideline
and had his student-athletes working for him,
while all the time acknowledging that in the best
case scenario he was simply keeping the seat warm
until Spencer returned. However, when it became
clear that Spencer would not return, this man
continued his great efforts at the helm, providing
the leadership that this group of young men needed.
The growth exhibited under the efforts of this
coach were tremendous. And all the while, this
man's attitude of hard work and devotion, mixed
with a tremendous sense of humor, did not change
or wane. He was the same man, day in and day out.
"It would be fair to say that the entire
men's basketball team could share in this award
following their experiences in 2006-07. However,
every group has a leader, and in this case, this
leader deserves the recognition of the highest
award offered by the UCR Athletics Department,"
Athletics Director Stan Morrison said. "I
know he will be the first to share this with his
fellow coach, Michael Mitchell and student-athletes."
