York Strother Returns to UC Riverside to Coach Men's Tennis
Program
(June 7, 2001) - The University of California, Riverside has
hired former UTEP Head Women's Tennis Coach and UCR alum York
Strother as the men's tennis coach, Director of Athletics
Stan Morrison announced Thursday.
"We are extremely pleased to welcome York back to UC Riverside,"
Morrison said. "He has shown great skill in building a solid
program, and we look forward to his efforts continuing to
grow our men's tennis team."
Strother takes over the reigns of the men's team from Mark
Henry, who will now solely coach the UCR women's team after
having coached both squads since 1995. Strother will begin
July 1.
At UTEP, Strother had coached the women's team at the University
of Texas, El Paso since 1992, and in his tenure there had
transformed the team into one that achieved national recognition.
In his nine seasons he posted a career record of 97-125 and
had earned national rankings in each of the past seven seasons.
In the 1994-95 season Strother guided UTEP to its first national
ranking and also had the program's first-ever nationally ranked
player in Andrea Petrovic. In 1997-98, UTEP finished the year
nationally ranked for the first time, as well as ranked in
the top 10 regionally. In nine years at UTEP, Strother has
