Three Highlanders Earn All-Conference Nod

(Apr. 26, 2005) - The UC Riverside men’s tennis team placed three players on the All-Big West Conference teams, it was announced Tuesday. Sophomore Justin Montgomery led the way, earning spots on both the singles and doubles second teams.

In his first season with the Highlanders after transferring from Pepperdine, Montgomery (Camarillo, CA) ascended to the #1 singles spot while partnering with junior Norman Tam (Los Angeles, CA) at the #1 doubles. Montgomery went 12-11 in singles play and 10-12 in doubles, including a record of 9-10 when paired with Tam. Montgomery and Tam were the only UCR doubles team to be named to this year’s All-Big West team. This is the third straight year Tam has earned Second Team All-Big West honors in doubles.

Sophomore Mark Contreras (Temple City, CA) was the other Highlander recognized by the conference, earning Honorable Mention in singles play. Contreras was 12-16 in 2005, primarily playing at the number two spot.

UCR finished the 2005 season with a 7-16 record and a fifth place finish at last weekend’s Big West Championships in Indian Wells. It is the highest finish for UCR in its four-year Big West history.
