(April 18, 2002) - San
Luis Obispo High School senior men's tennis player Devin Rippner
has signed a national letter of intent with UC Riverside,
Coach York Strother announced Thursday.
"We are very please to add Devin to our program. He is the
type of individual we want in the program: very solid student,
great individual, supportive household and family," Strother
said. "While he will have an immediate impact, I think the
contributions he will make in a year or two will be quite
significant."
Rippner is a four-year letterwinner at San Luis Obispo High
School. In his first three years with the program he has led
his team to three CIF appearances while posting one CIF individual
appearance.
In 2002 Rippner peaked at #5 in doubles in Southern California
Tennis Association 18's. In 2000 he was ranked #65 in singles
and #19 in doubles in the Southern California Tennis Association
16's. He also won the 56th Annual Ventura Junior Tennis Tournament
Terry Lynch Sportsmanship Award and the SCTA Area Sportsmanship
Award in 2000.
"Devin is a physical talent, and has a high-powered game.
His work ethic is outstanding. He has a fantastic coach in
Hugh Bream, and he is preparing Devin quite well. Finally,
he has a good role model within the family: Brie Rippner,
his cousin, is on the WTA Tour. "
Rippner has been named a recipient of a UCR Merit Scholarship.
(May 5, 2002) - Justin
Betyar, brother of current UCR men's tennis player Derek Betyar,
has signed a national letter of intent with the Highlanders,
Coach York Strother announced Wednesday.
"Justin is a solid tennis player. Parts of his game have definite
weapon potential, which is a must at the DI level. He has
a fiery, competitive spirit, Strother said.
"He comes from a good tennis family," Strother added. "He
takes his academics quite seriously. Justin is just the type
of young man that we need."
Betyar is a four-year letterwinner at Poway High School, where
he earned First Team All-League honors twice.
(August 1, 2002) - The
University of California Riverside men's tennis team has signed
Norman Tam of Belmont High School to a National Letter of
Intent, Coach York Strother announced on Friday.
"Norman is a warrior
on the court and has had considerable successful junior experience,"
Strother said. "He will have a very positive and immediate
impact in both doubles and singles.
Tam received the Southern
California B18 Sportsmanship Award in 2001 and has a Southern
California B18 ranking of 43 and USTA National Ranking of
243.
At Belmont, he was a CIF
finalist in 1999 and a CIF doubles champion in 2002. Tam also
competed in the Pacific Coast Metropolitan Junior Championships,
finishing as a finalist in doubles and singles four times.
At the Los Angeles Metropolitan Junior Championships, he was
a finalist three times in singles and one time in doubles.
Tam also participated in the Super National Hard Courts in
Kalamazoo, Michigan.
(October 18-19, 2002) -
Derek Betyar reached the second round at the USD All-College
Tournament as the Highlanders kicked off the 2002-03 season.
Betyar won his opening round
match against Nick Brottman of UCSB, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, then fell
in the second round to Nicolas Beuque of USD, 6-1, 6-4.
Betyar was the only Highlander
to get out of the first round in singles play. Norman Tam
fell to Pierrick Ysern of USD, 6-3, 6-1, Brent Davis lost
to Carl Hagman of Arizona, 6-1, 6-3. In the second flight,
Mirza Koristovic of USD defeated Caesar Regaliza, 6-1, 6-2,
Leo Basica of UCSB defeated Dan Stevens, 6-2, 7-5, and Justin
Betyar fell to Michael Fricke of UCSB, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles play, Betyar/
Davis defeated Koristovic/Regin of USD 8-4 and Tam/Stevens
defeated Chopra/Swatt of UCSD 8-5, both advancing to the second
round while Choppi/Regaliza fell to Coren/Jung of SDSU 8-2
in round one.
In the consolation bracket,
Davis defeated Sameer Chopra of UCSD 6-3, 6-3, Justin Betyar
defeated Kevin Patrick of Cal 7-6, 7-5 while Regalza fell
to Jerome Chan of UCSD 6-3, 6-3.
On Saturday, Tam defeated
Peter Surapol of UC Irvine 6-3, 6-3 but fell to Marc Schaerer
of Fresno State 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 in the semifinals of the consolation
bracket. Shaerer defeated Davis in the quarterfinals 6-2,
6-2 while Justin Betyar fell to Chris King of Oregon 6-3,
6-2 and Dan Stevens lost to Mike Coelho od San Diego State
6-1, 6-2.
In the second round of doubles,
Betyar/Davis fell to Hagman/O'Grady of Arizona 8-1 and Tam/Stevens
lost to Menke/Hossain of Oregon 9-7.

(Nov. 7, 2002) - Two UC
Riverside singles players won their first round match and
advanced to the second round of qualifying in the 46th Southern
California Intercollegiate Championships at the LA Tennis
Club, but none were able to advance to today's main draw.
Norman Tam defeated his
first-round opponent, Jaakko Asuja (LMU) 6-4, 7-6, but Tam
fell in the second round, 6-0, 6-4, to Renouk Wijemanne (UCI).
Derek Betyar defeated Eric Yandoc (UCI) 7-6, 7-5 but lsot
to Niclas Otte (UOP) 6-3, 6-0. Brent Davis and Justin Betyar
had byes into the second round but both fell in their matches,
Betyar to Mike Placek (UCSB) 6-0, 6-2 and Davis lost to Travis
Kinard (UCLA) 6-2, 6-2. Dan Stevens lost to Jordan Arnesen
(USF) 7-5, 6-1 in the first round.
The Highlanders will try
to advance to the main draw in doubles as Stevens/Tam moved
into the second round after a withdrawal from Parker Collins/Jeff
Kazarian (USC) and Betyar/Davis will also compete in doubles.
Paul Choppi/Toru Latto also withdrew due to injury.
(Jan 23, 2003) - The UC
Riverside Highlanders lost their first match of the season,
losing to the #49 University of San Diego 7-0 at the San Diego
Tennis and Racquet Club on Saturday.
The Toreros swept all three
doubles matches to earn the doubles point, then swept all
six singles matches in straight sets.

Calif. - The UC Riverside Highlanders defeated the UC Davis
Aggies, 5-2, at the UC Challenge at the Anteater Tennis Stadium
in Irvine. UC Davis won two of the three doubles matches to
earn the doubles point. UC Riverside won five of the six singles
matches to clinch the victory. UC Davis will play the singles
portion of a dual match against UC Irvine on Sunday and then
face UC San Diego later in the day. UC Riverside will play
the singles portion of its match against UC San Diego in the
morning before taking on UC Irvine in the afternoon. The UC
Challenge will start at 10:00 A.M.

(Feb. 27, 2003) - Today's
scheduled match between UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount
has been postponed due to the weather.
The courts at Riverside
are wet from the week of rain and with more on the way, both
coaches decided to postpone and set a tentative date of March
14 at 2:00 PM.
(March. 8, 2003) - The
UC Riverside Highlanders got their second win of the 2003
season with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Nevada at the UCR Tennis
Courts Saturday.
UCR opened the match by
taking two of the three doubles points. Brent Davis and Dan
Stevens defeated Adam Jooste and Jasson Yelley at No. 1 doubles
in a thrilling 9-8 (7-3) decision. The Highlanders also took
the No. 2 doubles as Derek Betyar and Norman Tam defeated
Dani Ericsson and McClure Wallace, 8-4.
In singles play, Jooste
and Tam had an epic three set battle that ended in a 6-3,
3-6, 6-3 Wolfpack victory. Davis won at No. 2 with a 6-3,
7-5 win over Ruio Leuschner, and No. 3 Derek Betyar outlasted
Yelley, who retired after losing the first match, 6-5.
The match turned on the
No. 5 singles match as Jordan Leo of UCR and Ericsson battled
to the wire. After losing the first set, 6-3, Leop bounced
back to win 6-2 and 6-4 to take the match and to give the
Highlanders a 4-3 advantage.

Riverside Highlanders won the doubles point with a pair of
comeback wins, but Denver University bounced back to defeat
the Highlanders 6-1at the UCR Tennis Courts Sunday. The loss
dropped the Highlanders to 2-10
The Highlanders had a pair
of comeback wins in doubles play to take the doubles point.
Derek and Justin Betyar trailed early, but rallied back for
an 8-6 win over Haus Peter Gaber and Viktor Zetterholm. Not
to be outdone, Cesar Regaliza and Dan Stevens bounced back
for a 9-7 win over Jason Tan and Colin Day.
But that would be the last
hurrah for the Highlanders, as Denver swept the singles matches.

Riverside Highlanders men's tennis team was swept by the No.
70 Oregon Ducks 7-0 at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene
on Tuesday.
The Ducks won all six singles
matched in straight sets and won all three doubles matches.

of Portland men’s tennis team defeated the UC Riverside
Highlanders, 6-1 on Thursday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis
Center. Portland improves to 5-8 overall, while UCR falls
to 2-12 on the season. The Pilots won the doubles point and
all three matches, and all but one singles match.
Jordan Leo was the lone
Highlander to post a victory, taking the No. 5 singles match
over Ram Hernandez, 3-6, 7-5, (14-12).

Riverside Highlanders (3-12) swept the doubles matches and
cruised in singles play to defeat Gonzaga in Spokane Saturday.
The Highlanders got off
to a great start, as the teams of Brent Davis and Norman Tam,
Derek and Justin Betyar and Cesar Regaliza and Dan Stevens
all posted wins in doubles play. The Highlanders continued
their success in singles, losing just one match and winning
11 of 13 sets.
UCR plays at Portland State
Sunday.

Riverside Highlanders (4-13) lost a tough 4-3 decision to
the visiting University of Redlands at the UCR Tennis Complex
Saturday.
The Bulldogs won the doubles
point, 2-1, clinching it with a hard-fought win at No. 1,
as Brian Murphy and Rob Condiotty outlasted Brent Davis and
Norman Tam in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (8-6). That tiebreaker would
eventially prove to be the difference in the match.
The teams split singles
play, three matches each, with the Highlanders taking the
odd matches and the Bulldogs the even ones.

Poly Pomona Broncos defeated UC Riverside 8-1 in a non-conference
match at Pomona Wednesday.
The Highlanders' lone win
on the day came at No. 2 singles as Brent Davis defeated Nguyen
Than, 6-2, 1-6 (10-8). Jordan Leo took Seamus Sullivan to
a supertiebreake befor falling 6-7, 6-3, (10-3). The Broncos
swept the doubles matches.

(April 24, 2003) - Danville,
Calif. - The second seeded UC Santa Barbara Gauchos completed
the second sweep in two matches at the 2003 Big West Conference
Men's Tennis Championships as the Gauchos defeated UC Riverside
5-0 on Thursday, April 24th. With the win the Gauchos moved
to 13-8 on the season, while the Highlanders dropped to 4-16.
The Gauchos swept all five
matches that were completed with the final singles match and
all doubles matches being cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
UC Santa Barbara advances
on to the semi-finals of the championship to face either #3
UC Irvine at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 25th. UC Riverside will
play in the back draw against the # 6 Utah State at 6 p.m.

Norman Tam and junior Brent Davis each received a pair of
All-Big West honors Wednesday.
Tam was named second team
All-Big West in singles play, while Davis earned honorable
mention in singles play. The duo teamed up to earn second
team doubles honors as well.
Tam started the season for
the Highlanders at No. 3 singles, but jumped to the No. 1
spot after six matches. He was 9-21 overall, including a 5-15
mark in dual matches. Davis primarily played at No. 2, posting
a 10-20 overall mark, 6-14 in dual matches.
In doubles, the duo were
the most successful combination for the Highlanders at the
No. 1 spot, posting a 2-7 record in dual matches this season.
