(November 10, 2007) -UCR
lost a tough 1-0 decision to Cal State Northridge at the UCR
Soccer Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders fall to
5-6-6 overall and 2-4-4 in the Big West and the Matadors improve
to 6-6-6 overall and 2-4-4 in the Big West.
Both teams played tough
defense all of the first half with both teams getting good
looks on net but both goalies stood tall with both sending
the half to a scoreless tie.
The same type of play was
shown in the second half with both teams battling to pick
up three points. The two squads combined to commit 36 fouls,
20 against CSUN including three yellow cards against three
different Matadors.
Northridge outshot the
Highlanders 11 to 7 on the day, none bigger than the shot
by Mattias Bovehi in the 75th minute. UCR senior keeper Charles
Alamo had come up to the front of the box to clear the ball
back downfield, but a Matador defender challenged Alamo’s
kick and deflected the kick straight up. The two players tangled
as the ball came back down and then bounced out towards midfield.
Bonvehi gathered the ball and lobbed a shot over the scrambling
Alamo along with a leaping Highlander defender to find the
back of the net for the eventual game-winner.
UCR travels to UC Irvine
on Wednesday for a match set for 7:00 p.m. This match had
to be rescheduled because the wildfires in late October forced
the Big West to postpone the game.
