(November 7, 2007) -Senior
keeper Charles Alamo recorded his sixth shutout of the season
as the Highlanders beat UC Irvine 2-0 Wednesday afternoon
to pick up their first win at the UCR Soccer Stadium this
season. Sophomore Zach Walker and senior Brandon Plummer each
found the back of the net for the Highlanders who improve
to 5-5-6 overall and 2-3-4 in the Big West.
UCR came out firing in
the first half, outshooting the Anteaters 4-2 in the half.
In the middle of the 12th minute, the Highlanders earned a
corner kick. Senior Steven Kaufman’s left-footed kick
was headed by sophomore Nathan Paterson towards the right
side of the goal and then on-timed by Walker who found the
back right corner of the net for his third goal of the season
and give UCR a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the half was
well played by the Highlander defense who limited the UCI
offensive attack to just two shots through the first 45 minutes.
UCR covered the field with renewed levels of confidence and
spoiled anyt Anteater threat throughout the match. The Highlanders
were working for their first win in nearly a month (10/10
@ Cal State Fullerton).
Defense was the theme in
the second half as well, the Anteaters turned up the dial
on offense and fired five shots in the half. The Highlander
defense, led by Alamo, continued to stone those UCI threats
to keep the lead at 1-0 for much of the second half.
Just past the 82nd minute,
senior Andrew Villalobos slipped a pass to a streaking sophomore
David Lozano along the left side who then sent a left-cross
over the UCI defenders to Plummer who banged in his second
goal of the season past the diving UCI keeper to make it a
2-0 advantage.
Alamo produced another
solid performance just as he as done game-in and game-out
throughout the season. He finished with five saves to pick
up the 16th career shutout.
This Saturday the Highlanders
welcome Cal State Northridge for their final home game of
the season set to begin at 3 pm. Prior ot the match, UCR will
acknowledge it’s six seniors, Alamo, Kaufman, Plummer,
Villalobos, Ben Oliver, and Andrew Hills.
