(October 10, 2007) -- UC
Riverside beat Cal State Fullerton 1-0 Wednesday night in
Fullerton, CA to pick up their first conference win of the
season and end a six game winless stretch (0-3-3). Sophomore
Nathan Paterson scored the matches’ only goal and senior
keeper Charles Alamo made six saves to record his third shutout
of the season.
Both teams played a very
physical match, a total of 34 fouls were called throughout
the match with 19 whistled against the Highlanders who improved
to 4-3-3 overall and 1-1-1in the Big West. The two squads
played to a scoreless first half with Fullerton (4-6-1, 0-3-1
Big West) outshooting UCR 4-3 at the break.
The Highlanders took advantage
of a Titans’ turnover in their own territory in the
60th minute after senior Andrew Villalobos stole ball and
fed Paterson who found the back of the net on a one-timer
from 35 yards out that proved to be the game-winner. Paterson
placed his third goal of the season over a leaping Titan keeper
Brent Douglas and just under the crossbar for one of the most
exciting goals of the season for the Highlanders.
UCR received five yellow
cards on the night; Fullerton received two yellow cards and
one red card that resulted in the Titans having to play a
man down the final 10 minutes. Having to play a man down proved
to be too much on a night when the Highlanders came out with
one of their stronger defensive efforts of the season and
were once again backed by one of the top keepers in the Big
West.
Alamo continued to man the
post for the Highlanders as he didn’t allow a shot by
in a critical match that the Highlanders needed to win in
order to keep pace with other teams in the Big West also vying
for a post-season berth.
With the win, UCR picked
up three points and now has a total of four points in the
conferences point column to put them in third place heading
into the match at fourth-place Cal State Northridge Saturday
at 2 p.m.
