(September 21, 2007) --
UC Riverside played to 1-1 tie in double overtime against
Cal State Bakersfield at the UCR Soccer Stadium Friday afternoon.
Senior Andrew Hills knocked in his first goal of the season
for the Highlanders as UCR (3-2-2) played to tie for the second
consecutive game after tying Sacramento State 2-2 earlier
in the week.
The Roadrunners (2-3-2)
got on the board just past the 41st on Javier Barba’s
goal into the top-left corner of the net. Barba made the shot
off of a perfectly placed volley from Mike Ezparza that beat
a diving UCR keeper, Charles Alamo for a 1-0 CS Bakersfield
lead.
The Highlanders came out
in the second half attacking the Roadrunner net, out-shooting
CSUB 6-5 in the second half. Hills tied the game at 1-1 with
a goal off of a perfectly placed crossing pass from senior
Brandon Plummer at the 55:57 mark.
Things began to get heated
between the two teams as time wound down in regulation and
neither team could produce a go-ahead goal. Two yellow cards
were handed out as a handful of players from both teams went
face to face before the referees broke things apart. 41 fouls
were called throughout the match.
UCR had a couple chances
early in the first overtime period after sophomore Nathan
Paterson got behind the Roadrunner defense but CSUB keeper
Steve Trojanowski came out and forced Paterson out of striking
position and the shot to go wide on two occasions.
Alamo made five saves and
lowered his goals against average (GAA) to 1.14. Trojanowski
also made five saves for CSUB.
The Highlanders next game
is set for October 3 when UCR begins Big West play at UC Davis
at 3 p.m.
