(September 9, 2007) -UC
Riverside beat Alabama A&M 1-0 in the Mercer University
Tournament in Macon, GA Sunday afternoon. The Highlanders
start the season with a record of 3-1 for the first time in
school history since moving to Division I in 2001.
Junior Aaron Hunter scored
the loan goal of the match at the 65:21 mark to give UCR the
win over the Bulldogs who’s record fell to 1-2 on the
season. Hunter took the ball that had deflected off of a Bulldog
defender and pounded home the unassisted eventual game-winner
from six yards out.
The Highlanders continued
to play hard nosed, just as they have been playing the first
three games of the season. A total of five yellow cards were
given out with only one being against a UCR player. The two
teams were competing in the midst of 96-degree temperatures
and high humidity levels.
Highlander senior keeper
Charles Alamo made three saves to earn his second shutout
of the season after holding #21 San Diego State scoreless
earlier in the week.
UCR returns to Riverside
to start a three game home stand, beginning Friday at 3 pm
against San Jose State.
