Riverside lost its first game of the season, 2-1in overtime
Friday night to Mercer University at the Mercer University
Tournament in Macon, GA. Sophomore Nathan Paterson knocked
in the only goal for the Highlanders as they fell to 2-1.
The Bears improve to 2-1.
The Highlanders got on
the board first as Paterson took a pass from freshman Cito
Soriano at 20:18 and banged it home from 18 yards out for
his second goal of the season to give the Highlanders an early
1-0 lead. Soriano picked up his second assist of the season
with a perfectly placed pass through two defenders to the
streaking Paterson who put past the Bear keeper.
Mercer evened up the score
1-1 on Jaime Villacis’s goal at the 32:56. Villacis
slipped it past Highlander goalkeeper Charles Alamo after
two Mercer players had gotten behind the UCR defense. Alamo
finished the night with 5 saves.
The Highlanders were out
shot 7-2 with shots-on-goal as the two teams played tough
the whole night, indicated by the 41 fouls that were called.
Neither team could get any goals across as regulation time
expired.
The Bears earned the victory
a little over four minutes into the overtime period. Villacis
added his second goal of the game and put the game winner
past Highlander keeper Charles Alamo at the 94:29 mark to
hand UCR its first loss of the season.
UCR continues play on the
east coast with a game against Alabama A&M in the same
tournament, Sunday at 10 am PST.
