UC Riverside beat #21 ranked San Diego State 2-0 in San Diego,
CA Saturday afternoon. Junior captain Joel Crompton and freshman
Cito Soriano each scored goals as the Highlanders improved
to 2-0 on the season for the first time since joining Division
I in 2002.
Soriano picked up his team
leading second goal of the season at the 12:07 mark to give
the Highlanders the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Nathan Paterson fed
Soriano on a perfectly placed through ball and Soriano banged
it into the left corner of the net for the advantage over
the Aztecs (0-1-1).
Late in the 79th minute,
Crompton picked up his first
goal of the season with a header off of a crossing pass from
junior David Watson. Crompton’s shot found the net just
over the head of Aztec keeper Ryan Bowie to extend the Highlander
lead to 2-0.
It was another highly contested
match for the Highlanders as six yellow cards were called
throughout the game just like the game two days earlier against
Central Arkansas.
UCR held on for their second
win in row even after being out shot in both wins. This time
SDSU launched 14 shots compared to UCR’s 11 but fellow
Highlander captain, senior keeper Charles Alamo, made four
saves to pick up his first shut out of the season and 11th
of his career.
The Aztecs were pre-season
ranked #21 by Top Drawer Soccer.
The Highlanders continue
on the road with matches against Mercer on Friday at 7pm (EST)
and Alabama A&M on Sunday at 2 pm (EST). Both games are
part of the Mercer University Tournament in Macon, GA.
