(March, 2008) – UC
Riverside senior softball player April Murray and senior men's
soccer player Charles Alamo were named Big West Scholar Athletes
at the conference's annual breakfast held on March 13th at
the Crowne Plaza Resort Anaheim in Anaheim, CA. Murray and
Alamo were among student-athletes from each of the Big West's
nine member schools to be honored.
Murray is the second Highlander
softball player to receive the Scholar Athlete award after
Jennifer Thompson received the honor last year. April has
started at second base the past three seasons and started
at both second base and in right field for UCR this season.
Last season, she was named the team's offensive and defensive
player of the year. Murray graduated cum laude with a degree
in business administration in June of 2007 after just three
years at UCR. She has also been named to the Big West All-Academic
team twice and is currently working on her MBA.
This is the second consecutive
year that Alamo has received the award. He finished his career
in goal as the Highlander's Division I all-time leader in
wins, games played, saves, and minutes all as a goalkeeper.
Alamo became the program's first player to receive a major
men's soccer award after being named the Big West Goalkeeper
of the Year and placed on the all-conference first team in
2007. He was also selected in the Major League Soccer Supplemental
Draft by the LA Galaxy. Alamo graduated cum laude with a degree
in Political Science this past December and plans on attending
the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
