Senior
Brandon Hillpot solidified his outstanding week with a one-under
69, the best 18-hole total by a Highlander in this year's
tournament. He barely missed out on qualifying for nationals
as an individual, as he was the third-best finisher from teams
that did not automatically advance. Hillpot finished tied
for 15th at 213 after rounds of 71-73-69.
Seniors
Brendan Steele and Eric Riehle each shot final rounds of 75,
placing them in ties for 62nd and 80th, respectively. Steele
ended his collegiate career at 10-over 220 while Riehle ended
up at 224, 14 strokes over par. Sophomore Spencer Paschall
could not continue his hot play, dropping off with a 78 after
shooting 74 and 73 on the first two days to finish one stroke
behind Riehle, tied for 91st. Senior
Cameron Nelson tied for 133rd with a final round 81 to put
him at 242.
UNLV
won the team competition, shooting a team total of 846, six
over par. New Mexico, Washington, UCLA, Arizona State, Brigham
Young, San Diego State, Arizona, Stanford, and Pepperdine
rounded out the top ten to move on to nationals. Stanford's
Rob Grube was the individual medalist, shooting a final round
65 to win by three strokes on 204. Oregon's Gregg LaVoie and
South Carolina's Alex Hamilton, both at two-over 212, advanced
as individuals.

(May
31, 2005) - UC Riverside golfers swept the top three places
at the 35th Annual San Bernardino County Amateur Golf Championship
at San Bernardino Golf Club over the Memorial Day weekend,
led by senior Brandon Hillpot’s unprecedented fifth-straight
triumph. Redshirt junior Nick Wilkins came second while senior
C.J. Nelson finished third.
Hillpot,
a native of Colton, fired a final-round 63 as he led the tournament
wire-to-wire. Hillpot opened the tournament Saturday with
a four-under 66 to take a four shot lead. He maintained that
advantage with a second-round 68 on Sunday before posting
the weekend’s lowest score Monday to finish at 13-under
197, 12 strokes in front of Wilkins. Hillpot joins current
Champions Tour rookie Mark Johnson as the event’s only
five-time winners.
Wilkins,
from Loma Linda, tried to keep pace with Hillpot, shooting
70-68-71 for 209. He finished three strokes in front of Rialto’s
Nelson, who followed up rounds of 71 and 73 with a final round
68 to total a two-over 212.
Hillpot
will continue to compete this summer as he looks to win next
month’s California Amateur Championship. Wilkins will
attempt to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Public Links in preparation
to return to UCR in the fall.
