Hillpot Makes History, Wins Fourth Straight San Bernardino Amatuer Championship

The win was Hillpot's fourth consecutive in the event. He joined Ted Lyford and Mark Johnson as the only golfers to win four titles. Johnson holds the tournament record with five wins.

Hillpot opened Sunday's round with a three shot lead over Ryan DeGood, but struggled at times, overcoming a double-bogey on the par-4 fifth hole, then a penalty for a double-hit on his third shot on the 10th hole.

On the 10th, the ball landed in a depression on the green, and when Hillpot struck the ball, the ball jumped up and hit his club a second time. Hillpot reported the error and the call was made.

"I've never had a double-hit putt," Hillpot told the Press Enterprise. "I've never even heard of one. A double hit with a putt? It was embarrassing."

But he recovered and was tied with Vilairatana until the 17th, when Vilairatana's drive off the tee hit a tree and disappeared. After a 10-minute search with over 50 fans helping, he was forced to tee off again. He took a bogey on the hole and Hillpot cruised to a two-shot win.
