(September 24, 2002) - UC
Riverside shot a third-round total of 289 to finish in seventh
place at the 14-team Pacific Invitational held at The Reserve
at Spanos Park, Stockton. UCR had shot a 570 in day one of
the two-day event, tying Oregon State. The Highlanders finished
the morning round at 3 over par with a 291 but gained ground
by shooting 279 in the afternoon.
Brendan Steele was the top
finisher for the Highlanders, shooting a four-under 212 for
the three rounds that put him in a tie for 17th. Brandon Hillpot
was right behind at 213, tied for 19th. CJ Nelson shot a 215,
good for 21st, and Eric Riehle shot a three-over 219 to round
out the top four finishers.
Nick Wilkins, making his
UCR debut, shot a 10-over 226 and Dusty Keen rounded out the
Highlander finishers with a 20-over 236.
UCLA won the tournament
with a three-round total of 830. Alvero Velasco of Coastal
Carolina took medalist honors with an 11-under par 205.
(Oct 1, 2002) - UC Riverside
shot a third-round total of 302 to finish in 12th place at
the 14-team Rocky Mountain Men's Intercollegiate held at The
Riverdale Dunes in Brighton, CO. UCR had shot a 596 in day
one of the two-day event, shooting 306 in the morning round
at 18 over par but bounced back by shooting 290 in the afternoon.
Eric Riehle was the top
finisher for the Highlanders, shooting a four-over 220 for
the three rounds that put him in a tie for 19th. Brendan Steele
was behind at 226, tied for 44th. Brandon Hillpot and Ruben
Stewart each shot 231, tied for 61st overall and CJ Nelson
shot a 17-over 233, tied for 69th, to round out the Highlnader
finishers.
Denver won the tournament
with a three-round total of 855. Derek Brown of NC Wilmington
took medalist honors with an 8-under par 208.
(Oct 22-23, 2002) -
Led by Brendan Steele's two-round total of 143, the Highlanders
finished fifth at the Tillinghast Tournament at Quaker Ridge
Golf Course in Scarsdale, NY.
Steele finished in a four-way
tie for fourth place while Brandon Hillpot and Dusty Keen
tied for 26th with a two-round total of 152. Eric Riehle tied
for 35th with a total of 153 and Cameron Nelson tied for 43rd
with a 155.
The Highlanders shot a two-round
total of 600, 24 strokes behind first place James Madison
University. UCR tied for the second best round of the day
(293) to catapult from eighth place to fifth. Andrew Svoboda
of St. John's won the tournament by two strokes with a two-round
total of 139.
(Oct 31-Nov 1, 2002) -
Led by Brendan Steele's three-round total of 219, the Highlanders
finished fourth at the 49er Collegiate at the SCPGA Champions
Course in Calimesa.
Steele finished tied for
ninth at 3-over. Eric Riehle tied for 23rd at 222, Brandon
Hillpot tied for 27th at 223, and Dusty Keen and Nick Wilkins
tied for 38th at 228. Competing as an individual, Ruben Stewart
finished 65th with a 243.
The Highlanders shot a three-round
total of 886 (293-289-304), 17 strokes back of first place
Arizona. Bobby Powers of San Jose State won the tournament,
shooting a 7-under, 209.
(Nov. 4-5, 2002) -
The UC Riverside Highlanders finished in 12th place with a
three-round total of 906 (+42) at the University of Hawaii
Fall Classic on the Links at Turtle Bay in Kahuku, HI.
Brendan Steele shot a three-round
total of 220, tied for 16th while Brandon Hillpot shot 228
to finish 50th. Eric Riehle tied for 51st with a 229, Cameron
Nelson was 69th with a 235, and Dusty Keen was finished tied
for 72nd with a 237.
As a team, the Highlanders
finished 49 shots back of first place UNLV. Dustin White of
Washington State won the tournament by one stroke with a 4-under
212 including a final round 67.
(Nov. 15, 2001) The UC
Riverside men's golf team signed its first player of the 2001early
signing period Thursday, inking Nick Wilkins of Loma Linda
Academy in Loma Linda to a National Letter of Intent.
"Nick is a great player," UCR Head Coach Paul Hjulberg said.
"We are very grateful to have him in the fold for next year."
Wilkins has a 3.7 grade point average. He was the regular
season strokes leader in the Christian League last year and
finished second in the Christian League tournament.
Wilkins will join former San Bernardino County standouts C.J.
Nelson of Aquinas and Brandon Hillpot of Colton.
The Highlanders are in their first year of playing in NCAA
Division I.
(Feb 11, 2003) - UC Riverside
maintained its first-day lead and won the championship of
the 23rd annual Anteater Men's Golf Invitational at Big Canyon
Country Club in Newport Beach. The Highlanders finished with
a 54-hole total of 874, including a team score of 301 in the
rain-delayed third round Tuesday.
UC Irvine finished second
with a three-round total of 892 and UTEP was third at 895
in the 11-team field.
UTEP's Chris Baryla won
medalist honors with a 3-under total of 213, including an
even-par 72 in Tuesday's final round. Sophomore Eric Riehle
of UC Riverside and Dan Swanson of UTEP tied for second at
216. No one in the 60-player field broke par Tuesday as Riehle
was the only other player to shoot a 72 in the last round.
The Highlanders placed three
golfers in the top 10, as sophomore Brendan Steele finished
fifth witha 3-over 219, tied with freshman teammate Nick Wilkins.
Sophomore Brandon Hillpot was 11th with a 7-over 223 and C.J.
Nelson was 38th at 18 -over 234.

(Mar. 3, 2003) - Garrett
Clegg of the University of Utah shot a 6-under 66 to help
the Utes to a two shot lead after the first round of the UC
Riverside Braveheart Classic at the PGA of Southern California
course in Beaumont, CA Monday.
The tournament was originally
scheduled for 36 holes on Monday and 54 overall, but the second
round was called on account of darkness before all the teams
had finished. The round will be completed Tuesday morning
prior to the start of the third round. The shotgun start is
scheduled for 8:30 AM.
The Utes lead the 16-team
field with a team total of 285. The University of Denver is
in second place at 287, with the host UC Riverside Highlanders
and University of Idaho tied for third at 289.
Clegg shot a 33 on both
the front and back nine, tying him for first with Ben Kreger
of New Mexico State, who shot a 31-35.
The Highlanders perhaps
best prepared to make a move with three players shooting 72
and one at 73. Sophomores Brendan Steele and Cameron Nelson
and freshman Nick Wilkins are all at par, while sophomore
Eric Riehle is one shot behind at 73.

(Mar. 4, 2003) - The host
UC Riverside Highlanders were the only school to finish below
par as they cruised to a 23-shot win at the Braveheart Classic
Golf Tournament at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club
Champions Course in Beaumont, CA Tuesday. The Highlanders
finished the tournament withal team score of 845, including
back-to-back scores of 278 in the second and third round.
Garrett Clegg of the University
of Utah was the wire-to-wire individual winner, shooting an
eight-under 208 to take medallist honors. Ben Kreger of New
Mexico State, the co-leader after the first round, overcame
a rough second round to finish second with a six-under 210,
tied with UC Riverside sophomore Cameron "C.J."
Nelson.
The University of Denver
held on to second place honors with a four-over 868, while
first round leader Utah slipped to third with a six-over 870.
The golfers had to deal
with wind and rain on Tuesday as a storm front blew through
the region. Play began Tuesday morning as teams concluded
the second round, which had been stopped short due to darkness
on Monday.
The Highlanders took the
lead in the second round, blistering the field with a 10-under
278, the best team round of the tournament. However, UCR was
not finished, matching the performance in the third round.
UCR was the only team to shoot a round lower than 285. UCR
finished with four golfers in the top 11, as sophomore Brendan
Steele finished fourth with a five-under 211, sophomore Eric
Riehle tied for fifth with a four-under 71 and sophomore Brandon
Hillpot tied for 11th with an even 216. Freshman Nick Wilkins
rounded out the top five for UCR, finishing at four-over 220.

(Mar. 19, 2003) - UC Riverside
sophomore Cameron "C.J." Nelson (Rialto, CA) has
been named Big West Golf Athlete of the Week, the conference
office announced on Wednesday.
Nelson helped the Highlanders
to a first-place finish in the UCR Braveheart Classic, finishing
tied for second individually with a six-under par score. Nelson
shot a 208 for the tournament, highlighted by a 66 in the
first round.
(April 1, 2003) - Brendan
Steele shot an eight-under 208 over three rounds, good for
second place overall and helping the Highlanders to a third
place finish with a three-round total of 845 at the Bite/Pacific
Coast Intercollegiate Tournament at Sandpiper Golf Course
in Santa Barbara Tuesday.
The Highlanders finished
with four shots behind first-place Fresno State and two shots
behind UC Irvine. Twenty-one teams in all were entered in
the tournament.
Steele shot a 69 and 68
on Monday, then finished with a 71 on Tuesday. He finished
tied for second with Mike Lavery of UC Irvine and nine shots
behind first place Nick Watney of Fresno State, who cruised
to a 17-under 199, never shooting over 70.
Sophomore Brandon Hillpot
and freshman Nick Wilkins finished tied for ninth place at
211, and sophomore Eric Riehle was 32nd at 217. Sophomore
Cameron Nelson was 47th at 219.

(April 8, 2003) - San Jose,
CA - The UC Riverside Highlanders fell four spots on the final
day to finish in 15th place at the 57th Western Intercollegiate
Golf Tournament at Pasatiempo G.C. in Santa Cruz, CA.
UCLA leads the tournament
with a three round total of 855. The Highlanders finished
40 shots behind at 895. UCR shot a 306 in the final round
after posting a 294 and 295 in the first two rounds.
Sophomore Brendan Steele
finished in fourth place with a one-over 211, while Eric Riehle
fell from 29th to 44th with a 225. Cameron Nelson fell to
52nd at 227, and Brandon Hillpot rounded out the top four
with a 233, tied for 75th.

Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside Highlanders used a strong third
round to move up two spots, from fifth to third at the Fidelity
National Title Tournament hosted by Cal Poly at Cypress Ridge
Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
Sophomore Brendan Steele
finished fifth overall at two under 214, having shot identical
71's in the first two rounds. Eric Riehle, Cameron Nelson
and Nick Wilkins all tied for 17th at 222.
Host Cal Poly won the tournament
with a three-round total of 847.

(April 22, 2003) - EL DORADO
HILLS, Calif. - UCR sophomore Eric Riehle finished tied for
eighth and the UC Riverside Highlanders placed sixth overall
at the Big West Tournament at Serrano Country Club Tuesday. The
tournament was reduced to two rounds, 36 holes, following
intense rain on Monday.
The Highlanders finished
with a two-round total of 600, 19 shots behind first place
UC Irvine's 581. Mike Lavery of UC Irvine won the event with
a six-under 138.
Riehle was the top finisher
for UCR, finishing at three-over 147. Brandon Hillpot placed
19th with a six-over 150.

(April 23, 2003) - Sophomore
Brendan Steele and sophomore Eric Riehle earned All-Big West
honors the conferenced announced Tuesday.
Steele was named first team
All-Big West, while Riehle earned second team honors.
Steele led the team with
a 72.10 stroke average, the 18th best in the region according
to Golfstat.com. Riehle was second on the team at 73.61, 50th
in the region.
(May 5, 2003) - Sophomore
Brendan Steele was selected to play as an individual at the
NCAA West Regional Tournament, May 15-17 at the Washington
National Club in Auburn, WA. The tournament is hosted by the
University of Washington.
Steele is the second member
of the golf team to be selected since the program was resurrected
two years ago. Last year Brandon Hillpot was selected to play
in the 2002 West Regional.
"It is an honor to
have one of your players selected," Head Coach Paul Hjulberg
said. "We are excited.”
Steele, a first team All-Big
West honoree, led the team with a 72.10 stroke average, the
18th best in the region according to Golfstat.com.
The top two individual finishers
from the tournament will go on to play at the NCAA Championships
the following week.
(May 15, 2003) - Auburn,
WA -- A frost delay and three weather stoppages prevented
the first round of the NCAA West Regional men's golf championship
to finish before darkness at Washington National Golf Club.
Only 12 of 27 teams managed
to complete their first round of play. Denver and Oregon lead
that group at 7-over 295. Heavy rains, hail and high winds
hit the course three times during the afternoon to disrupt
play. Only the teams seeded 16th through 27th, that teed off
in the morning, were able to complete their 18 holes after
an accumulation of four hours and 13 minutes of delays.
The final 18 holes of the
54-hole stroke play event will take place Saturday. The top
10 teams and the top two individuals not attached to those
teams will advance to the NCAA Championships at Oklahoma State.
(May 16, 2003) - Auburn,
WA -- UC Riverside sophomore Brendan Steele is tied for 94th
after tw o rounds at the NCAA West Regional championship at
Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, WA.
Steele shot a first round
77, then followed with a 79, leaving him 12 shots over at
156.
UCLA, led by John Merrick's
course record 67, jumped out to a nine-stroke lead by shooting
8-under 280 on Friday. The top-seeded Bruins are 5-under after
36 holes at 571. Arizona is in second place at 580 after turning
in a team score of 3-under 285 on Friday.
(May 17, 2003) - Auburn,
WA -- UC Riverside sophomore Brendan Steele finished tied
for 85th place at the NCAA West Regional championship at Washington
National Golf Club in Auburn, WA.
Steele shot a personal tournament
best of 74 in the final round, finishing with a thre round
total of 230, 14 over par.
Michael Letzig of New Mexico
won medalist honors with an eight-under 208, holding off a
late charge by Pepperdine's Michael Putnam, who had a round-low
64 to move from 19th to second. UCLA won the team tournament
with a total of 864, one shot better than Arizona.
