(Dec. 4, 2007) –Larry
Cunningham did all he could to lift UCR to their first road
win of the season. In the end it was’nt enough as the
Highlanders fell to San Diego State 59-46 at Cox Arena in
San Diego Tuesday night. With loss UCR is now 2-6 for the
season.
Cunningham scored a game
high 21 points as he made seven of his shots from the field
and five-of-six from the free throw line. It was the third
time the senior has finished a game with 21 or more points,
and was one point off his season high.
After falling behind in
the opening minutes of the first half, the Highlanders retook
the lead at 8-7 on back-to-back three pointers by Larry Cunningham
with 13:30 remaining in the half. But it would be the last
time UCR would hold the lead on the night.
Either team was able to
take advantage in the first half. UCR shot only 29 percent
in the first half, while the SDSU shot could only manage a
37 percent shooting percentage from the field in then half.
The teams combined for a total of 17 turnovers in the half.
The Highlanders matched their lowest first half point total
of the season as they trailed 26-18 at halftime. Cunningham
led both teams with 12 points through the first 20 minutes.
San Diego State was able
to open a bigger lead midway through the second half as they
out-scored the Highlanders 16-11 over a nine-minute stretch
of the half.
However, the Highlanders
used a six point run to cut the Aztec lead to single digits
with under three minutes to play, Cunningham’s three-point
play capped the UCR run.
The Aztecs had three players
score in double figures led by Kevin Davis who finished with
16 points.
Sophomore Sean Cunningham
finished with 10 points for UCR before he fouled out with
2:53 to play.

finished the game shooting 38 percent (18-for-53) for the

%) in the game, but were out-scored at the line by the Aztecs
by 13 points.
The Highlanders will be
off for the next 11 days as the players take their final exams
and then return to action on December 15 when they host to
