(Nov. 15, 2007) –UC
Riverside dropped a 84-48 decision to the 14th ranked Gonzaga
Bulldogs in front of 6,000 people at the McCarthey Athletic
Center in Spokane, WA. Saturday night. Senior Larry Cunningham
finished with 11 points for the Highlanders who fall to 0-4
to start the season.
Sophomore Sean Cunningham
and junior Severin Gates each added nine points for UCR. Four
Bulldogs (3-0) finished with double figures in points led
by Austin Daye with 16 points.
Fatigue may have been a
factor for UCR who played their final game of their season-opening
four-game, 10-day, road trip. The Highlanders played well
early but could not overcome turning the ball over 17 times
to the 14th ranked team in the country who scored 23 points
off of those UCR miscues.
UCR shot 10-for-27 (37%)
from the floor and used a 7-0 run to get within five capped
by a Gate’s three-pointer at the 2:44 mark of the first
half. The Zags then answered with their own 9-0 run to take
a 38-24 advantage into the break.
The Highlanders continued to give up points down low for much
of the second half, as the Bulldog big-men piled up 24 points
in the paint during the second 20 minutes. The Bulldogs won
the overall battle for points down low, 46-16. Gonzaga outscored
(46-24) and out-shot (48%-38.5%) the Highlanders in the second
half.
Gonzaga finished the game
30-for-57 (52.6%) from the floor and UCR could not get a shot
to fall in attempt to slow down the Bulldog momentum for much
of the second half, finishing the night 20-for-53 (37.7%)
from the field.
UCR returns to Riverside
for their home opener against Idaho, November 24th at 7:00
p.m. in the Student Recreation Center.
