(May 11, 2007) - New UC
Riverside Head Men's Basketball Coach Jim Wooldridge has announced
that Assistant Coach Vonn Webb will return to the coaching
staff for the 2007-08 season.
"Vonn Webb is an outstanding
recruiter, coach and person. Since arriving on campus, I have
come to believe that Coach Webb will be a tremendous asset
to what we want to build for the future," Wooldridge
said.
"I am very thankful
to Coach Wooldridge and Athletics Director Stan Morrison for
giving me the opportunity to remain a part of this staff,"
Webb said. "It is a great feeling knowing that I will
have the chance to continue working with the young men on
this team. They are a great group of guys who have the opportunity
to be very successful. I love all these guys."
Webb joined UC Riverside
as an assistant coach in the spring of 2005 under then-Head
Coach David Spencer, then served as the interim head coach
during the 2006-07 season as Spencer was sidelined by illness
and injury, leading the injury-depleted Highlanders to a 7-24
record.
Webb has 19 years of coaching
experience at the high school and collegiate level. He spent
two years at Fresno State University on Ray Lopes’ staff,
where he assisted in all aspects of recruiting as well as
individual player development.
Webb was an acclaimed coach
at Washington Union High School in Fresno, CA, where he served
two terms of duty, from 1995-99 and 2000-03, amassing an .850
winning percentage (182-32). During his career he helped to
develop some the top basketball talent coming out of the San
Joaquin Valley, including current NBA players Chris Jeffries
and Deshawn Stevenson. During his tenure he earned a pair
of CIF State Championships, five section championships, seven
league championships and two section runners-up.
Webb earned several honors,
including California State Coach of the Year in 1996-97 and
Fresno Bee Central Section Coach of the Year in 1996, 1998
and 1999.
He also has 15 years of
teaching experience including health, physical education,
world history, English, literature and multicultural studies.
Webb spent the 1999-00 season
as an assistant coach at the University of Wyoming under Coach
Steve McClain. That year the Cowboys posted a 19-12 record
and reached the semi-finals of the Mountain West Conference
Tournament.
Webb attended Neosho County
Community College in Chanute, Kansas from 1981-83, where he
was a two-year letterwinner. He went on to Kansas State University
for a year, then transferred to Western New Mexico University,
where he earned his degree in 1989. While at WNMU he played
football and basketball, earning all-league honors in football.
Webb is a member of the
Black Coaches Association and the National Association of
Basketball Coaches. Away from the court he participates as
a board member for the “Hope for Youth” group
homes.
