Senior Larry Cunningham's game-high 22 points wasn’t
enough for the Highlanders aas they fell to Cal State Northridge
73-61 in Northridge, CA Saturday night. Junior's Aaron Scott
and Christian Soto each finished with 13 points for UCR (5-17,
2-9 Big West).
The Highlanders shot 21-of-50
(42.0%) from the floor and 15-for-22 from the free-throw line.
The Matadors (17-6, 9-2 Big West), entered the game in first
place in the Big West, opened up leads of 10 points or more
for most of the first half and took a 34-20 lead into the
break after holding the Highlanders to 8-of-21 (38.1%) shooting
through the first 20 minutes.
UCR continued to struggle
with their shooting to open the second half and trailed by
21 at one point, 50-29 at the 12:11 mark. But hey then produced
one of the best scoring runs in school-history, going on a
21-2 run over the next five minutes, led by Cunningham's 15
points during that span. A Soto jumper and two free-throws
on consecutive possessions cut the CSUN lead to 52-50 with
6:27 remaining.
Northridge would answer
though, out-scoring the Highlanders 21-11 over the final minutes
to pick up the Big West victory.
Soto added eight boards
to his career-high in points and Cunningham brought down six
while tying his season-high in points. Cunningham's sixth
20-plus scoring effort of the season moves him closer to the
UCR all-time scoring mark, he trails Howard Lee (1386 total
points) by 48 points with six regular season games remaining.

to face UC Irvine on Wednesday and the will host Hawaii for
the ESPNU BracketBuster next Saturday.
