(January 23, 2008) –
UC Riverside dropped a 72-61 decision to Cal State Fullerton
in Fullerton, CA Wednesday night. Senior Larry Cunningham
put up a team-high 14 points as three different Highlanders
(4-13, 1-5 Big West) finished in double-figures in the losing
effort.
Sophomore Sean Cunningham
put up 13 points and freshman Jalonni Diggs chipped in with
10 points and dished out a game-high five assists as UCR struggled
with their shooting throughout the night, finishing 24-61
(36.3%) from the floor. UCR was able to match long range shooting
by the Titans (1-6, 5-2 Big West), each knocking down 6-of-18
(33.3%) from behind the three-point line.
CSF opened up a 20-9 lead
11 minutes in, but a 9-0 Highlander run over the next three
minutes capped by Larry Cunningham’s three with 5:54
left in the half, cut it to 20-18.
The Titans answered with
a 12-3 run of their own to close out the half, as Marcio Lassiter’s
three in the closing seconds gave Fullerton a 32-22 lead at
the break. Shots did not fall for the young Highlander squad
as they finished the first half 9-of-31 (29.0%) and made only
two threes.
UCR came out in the second
half shooting much better, finishing the half shooting 15-30
(50.0%) from the floor and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Fullerton
was able to answer though, taking advantage at the free-throw
line, making 13-of-15 (86.7%) in second half and finished
game with 20 free-throw makes to UCR’s seven.
The Highlanders were unable
to pick up their second straight victory after trailing by
as much as 15 and would get no closer than seven after Larry
Cunningham’s three cut it to 68-61 in the closing seconds.
CSF made their free-throws down the stretch to pick up the
victory.
UCR continues on the road
with a trip down to face UC Irvine on Saturday.
