(January 9, 2007) –
UC Riverside men's basketball Head Coach Jim Wooldridge announced
that sophomore forward Kyle Austin will transfer from USC
to UC Riverside and enroll in 2008 Winter quarter.
The 6’7” Austin
leaves the Trojans after scoring 24 points and grabbing 28
rebounds in the 17 games he appeared in, including the first
two games of the NCAA tournament last season. The Pasadena,
CA native started the only game he appeared in this year and
will provide more experience on the floor for the Highlanders.
“We are very excited
to have Kyle join our program. He will be a big part of our
rebuilding process and will make an immediate impact in every
way for us next season” said Wooldridge.
Austin played at Pasadena
High where he was selected to The Press-Enterprise 2006 Division
I-A first team and was a Long Beach Press Telegram 2006 Best
in the West third-team selection. Pasadena High went 25-4
in his senior season. He was the Star News Player of the Year
for the 2004-05 season, his junior season, and also shared
Pacific League MVP honors after he averaged 21 points and
seven rebounds per game.
In order to meet eligibility
rules, a transfer student from a four-year institution must
fulfill one full academic year at UC Riverside prior to being
eligible for competition. Austin expects to participate in
his first contest with the Highlanders after the completion
of the Fall 2008 term.
