at the Student Rec Center Monday night. Junior Cleavon Barlow
finished with 11 points to lead the Highlanders who drop to
3-11 overall and 0-3 in the Big West on the season.
UCR was unable to match
the hot outside shooting by Cal State Fullerton (9-4, 2-0
Big West) all night long. CSF shot 28-of-59 (47.5%) and was
led by Josh Akognon’s game-high 30 points after he knocked
down 7 of 11 three point attempts in the game. A tough Fullerton
defense pressured the Highlanders for most of the game, holding
the young UC Riverside squad to 16-of-59 (27.1%) shooting
including 3-for-20 (15.0%) from beyond the arc.
Akognon went off from the
outside with 22 first half points including all five of CSF’s
three’s as the Ttitans shot 16-of-33 (48.5%) to took
a 41-25 lead at the break.
Senior Larry Cunningham
paced the Highlanders with seven points as UCR struggled to
get anything to fall, shooting 8-of-25 (32.0%) through the
first 20 minutes. UCR worked hard underneath the basket, matching
the Titans with 20 first half rebounds.
In the second half is more of the same, hot shooting by CSF
and shots that wouldn’t drop for the Highlanders. UCR
shot 8-of-34 (23.5%) and 0-for-11 from behind the three-point
line in the final 20 minutes.
Larry Cunningham added
10 points, sophomore Sean Cunningham finished with nine points
and seven boards, and junior Benoit Bekono brought down a
game-high eight boards.
