The
UC Riverside Track and Field Stadium is a historical landmark of
sorts on the UCR campus.
Although the
stadium is second only to the Physical Education building in terms
of continuous use and longevity, it has undergone many improvements,
including the installation of an all-weather running surface and
improved runways for the jumping events.
In 1999 the
facility received a major improvement with the construction of a
dedicated throwing facility adjacent to the nearby UCR Recreation
Fields. A new hammer throw/discus cage was constructed along with
a new platform for the shot put.
The
track is home to several significant events over the course of the
school year, including the annual UC Riverside Track Classic, which
during the 1980s and 90s was one of the largest open track meets
in the Southland. Other events held at the track include the Special
Olympics and the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP).
