The
UC Riverside Student Recreation Center opened in January 1994, providing
a state-of-the-art facility for students to build their physical
fitness as well as a new home for the Highlander basketball and
volleyball teams.
The 80,000-square-foot
building was planned by students and funded through student fees.
It includes four racquetball/ wallyball courts and one squash court,
a 6,000-square foot weight training facility and a 3,000 square
foot area dedicated to cardio-fitness machines. The center, which
can seat 3,168 fans, also has full locker rooms, three multipurpose
rooms, and a four-court gymnasium that is home to the UCR intramural
program.
On game nights
the gym becomes the home of the Highlanders, where top-level Division
I volleyball and basketball competition awaits all who enter.
Immediately
adjacent to the center is the new UCR Sports and Recreation Complex.
The facility houses 10 tennis courts, including a center court with
seating for 500, two sand volleyball courts, two basketball courts,
and a full sized roller hockey rink. In addition, the rink features
basketball back-boards that allow it to be converted into two full-length
basketball courts. Topping it off is an eight-foot wide jogging
trail that surrounds the entire three-quarter of an acre complex.
All the facilities are lighted for evening use.
