(Sept. 29, 2007) –
The UCR men’s and women’s cross country teams
were impressive in the 27th Annual UC Riverside Cross Country
Invitational Saturday morning at the UC Agricultural Operations
Course in Riverside. The morning’s event was highlighted
by the outstanding effort of sophomore Brenda Martinez, as
she set a course record with a 5,000-meter time of 16:52.10,
besting the old record by over 15 seconds.
“I am happy with the
way Brenda ran today, but it wasn’t suprising considering
all the work she has put into her training”, said Head
coach Irv Ray. “I think she ran within herself and I
believe this is a sign of things to come.”
Sophomore Danielle Evans
(17:18.80) finshed two spots behind Martinez for third place,
while senior Lisa Lopez (17:42.80) finshed ninth. Senior Celene
Reyes (17:44.30) and sophomore Ashleigh Pratt (18:06.60) finished
11th and 18th respectively, giving the Highlanders a total
of 42 points, 15 ahead of the second place club team, See
Jane Run. Rounding out the top five teams were Cal Coast Track
Club, Southern Utah and Cal State San Marcos.
“The women looked
strong today, they showed their depth as we were without our
number two, Cristina Olivas and Brittany Young,” Ray
said.
Individually, Sharla Platt
(17:18.70) placed second, UCR’s Evans was third, Cambria
D’Aico (17:23.40) of See Jane Run finished fourth and
Heather Frisone (unattached) finshed fifth with a time of
17:24.50.
Mark Currell of Southern
Utah won the men’s race in 24:07.20 while Juan Mejia
(24:15.90) of Cal State San Marcos placed second as his teammate
Sergio Gonzalez came in fourth at 24:25.90.
The UCR men were equally
impressive as all five runners finished in the top 12 in the
8,000-meter race. Leading the way for UC Riverside was senior
Ulices Pina who placed third with a time of 24:23.80. Senior
Raul Lara (24:28.50) and junior Andrew Tachias (24:32.00)
finished fifth and sixth. Junior Michael Buell crossed the
line in eighth place with a time of 24:49.00 and sophomore
Daniel Lindstrom recorded a time of 25:07.50 for 12th place,
for a combined team score of 34.
The men won the UC Riverside
Invitational for the first time as a Division I program, and
this is the first time that both the men and women have both
won the same year.
Coach Ray added, “It
was exciting to see both the men and women be successful,
I am looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Southern Utah showed how
talented their team was with a second place finish with 71
points, as Cal State San Marcos, Westmont and Cal Poly Pomona
were the top five teams.
This year the UC Riverside
Invitational featured a combined 39 teams and 385 runners.
Both Highlander teams will
continue their 2007 schedule at the Cal Poly Invitational
on October 13th in San Luis Obispo, CA.
