(Sept. 1, 2007) - The Highlanders
cross country teams started the 2007 campaign in a big way
Friday as the women placed first overall -aided by a first-place
effort by Junior Cristina Olivas and four runners among the
top five finishers - and the men second at the Nevada Twilight
Cross Country Meet, hosted by the University of Nevada at
Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno Friday.
Olivas, a native of Bloomington,
CA, picked up right where she left off last season, covering
the four kilometer course in 15:43. However, she was pushed
to the very last moment by Nevada's Amanda Moreno, who placed
second just one second behind. junior Brenda Martinez (Rancho
Cucamonga, CA) took third place in 15:52, Ashleigh Pratt (Riverside,
CA) fourth in 15:55 and Lisa Lopez (Hesperia, CA) fifth in
15:59. Celene Reyes (Pauma Valley, CA) also had a top-10 finish,
placing eighth in 16:02.
The Highlanders beat the
host Wolfpack, 21-49, with UCLA placing third with 53 points.
The men's team placed second
behind UCLA with a total of 51 points, placing ahead of Humboldt
State and Sacramento State. Senior Ulices Pina (Long Beach,
CA) was the Highlanders' top finisher, placing sixth overall
in 20:11 over the six kilometer course. Junior Andrew Tachias
(West Covina, CA) was 11th overall in 20:27 and Pedro Ramos
(Long Beach, CA) and Raul Lara (Orange, CA) rounded out the
top four, Ramos placing 14th in 20:38 and Lara 15th in 20:43.
