Women Place First Behind Olivas, Men Second at Nevada Twilight Meet in Reno

(Sept. 1, 2007) - The Highlanders cross country teams started the 2007 campaign in a big way Friday as the women placed first overall -aided by a first-place effort by Junior Cristina Olivas and four runners among the top five finishers - and the men second at the Nevada Twilight Cross Country Meet, hosted by the University of Nevada at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno Friday.

Olivas, a native of Bloomington, CA, picked up right where she left off last season, covering the four kilometer course in 15:43. However, she was pushed to the very last moment by Nevada's Amanda Moreno, who placed second just one second behind. junior Brenda Martinez (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) took third place in 15:52, Ashleigh Pratt (Riverside, CA) fourth in 15:55 and Lisa Lopez (Hesperia, CA) fifth in 15:59. Celene Reyes (Pauma Valley, CA) also had a top-10 finish, placing eighth in 16:02.

The Highlanders beat the host Wolfpack, 21-49, with UCLA placing third with 53 points.

The men's team placed second behind UCLA with a total of 51 points, placing ahead of Humboldt State and Sacramento State. Senior Ulices Pina (Long Beach, CA) was the Highlanders' top finisher, placing sixth overall in 20:11 over the six kilometer course. Junior Andrew Tachias (West Covina, CA) was 11th overall in 20:27 and Pedro Ramos (Long Beach, CA) and Raul Lara (Orange, CA) rounded out the top four, Ramos placing 14th in 20:38 and Lara 15th in 20:43.
