(April 4,
2007) - UC Riverside's baseball program received a boost in
2007 when it renovated the old storage area in the left field
corner of the Riverside Sports Complex, turning it into a
state-of-the-art clubhouse. The new clubhouse features a coaching
suite, including a reception/lounge area and coaches' lockers,
that is separated from the player's locker room.
The players' locker room
features 34 hand-crafted oak lockers that measure eight feet
tall by 34 inches wide. The lockers have hangers for the players'
uniforms and street clothes, shelving for personal items,
and a seating area that doubles as a lock box.
Situated off the main locker
room are three separate areas: a players' lounge, training
room, and equipment room. The players' lounge features a wrap-around
couch, 42-inch plasma TV, refridgerator, and microwave, allowing
for a place where players can view film and scout opponents
or just go to unwind. The fully-operational training room
helps UCR's certified athletic training staff handle injuries
in a timely manner, keeping the Highlanders on the field.
The tile-floored equipment storage area serves as a means
for players to keep the new locker room in prestine condition,
as no cleats or bats are allowed on the main room's carpet.
"This facility will
be a great thing to promote team chemistry with kids talking
about life, playing cards, studying, or doing whatever they
want to," Head Coach Doug Smith said. "The players
absolutely love being inside the new locker room. Once they
step out the door, it is only 40 feet from the playing surface
into left field.
