Highlanders Sweep Dons with 11-7 Win in Finale

BOX SCORE

(Mar. 13, 2004) - For the second time this season, the UC Riverside baseball team swept an opponent with an 11-7 win in the series finale over the visiting University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders won the previous two games to improve to 12-11 for the season.

Catcher Nick Salotti continued his dominance over the Diamond Dons (7-12), going 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Salotti finished the series with a .615 batting average scoring four runs and driving in three.

UCR starter John Martinez (3-0) made another respectable start for UCR, allowing five runs on 11 hits but managed to stay in the game for eight innings of work. USF starter T.J. Franco (2-2) took the loss for the Dons, allowing six runs on six hits.

The Dons took off early, making it look like a long afternoon for the Highlanders by ripping off four runs in the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead.

USF got on the board first on back-to-back hits in the second, before the Highlanders got a break. UCR got a perfectly timed double-play line drive to the pitcher who turned and got the final out of the inning at second.

The next inning, the first of many defensive bloopers by both teams allowing three more runs to score. With two outs and runners on second and third, designated hitter Blake Nelson singled to right scoring second baseman Cy Donald and center fielder Johnnie Knoble. The right fielder then bobbled the ball allowing Nelson to advance all the way to third and first baseman Chris Genung to cross the plate.

The Highlanders' turn was next, as they took the lead in the third on six hits and a little help from the USF defense.

Down 4-0 entering the frame, UCR scored their first run on a two-out RBI-single from left fielder Matt Cunningham, scoring right fielder Aaron Seuss from second. With two on, third baseman Tony Festa popped up what appeared to be the final out of the inning, but miscommunication from the USF defense allowed the ball to drop between four fielders for a two-RBI double. Two more RBI-singles from catcher Nick Salotti and designated hitter Louie Hernandez gave UCR a 5-4 lead.

The Dons knotted the game up in the fifth, scoring second baseman Cy Donald on third baseman Andrew Smith's double, but it did not last long as UCR scored three in its half of the inning.

Again with two outs, the Highlanders’ Hernandez singled through the right side to score leadoff hitter Brett Bigler. Two batters later, right fielder Aaron Seuss atoned for his defensive miscue with a two-RBI single up the middle to score the eventual game-winning run.

UCR would add three more in the seventh while USF made a small surge in the ninth, scoring a pair of runs before the Highlander could retire the side for the 11-7 win.

Both teams combined for 30 hits with UCR knocking out 16 and every Highlander managing a hit in the game. Bigler, Festa, Salotti, Hernandez and Seuss all had multiple-hit games. Hernandez and Seuss led the team with three hits apiece.

Shortstop Armond Gaerlin led the offense for the Dons, going 3-for-5. Donald, Genung, Nelson and Knoble all had two hits for USF.

The Highlanders take the week off for finals and will return to action with a pair of games at Sacramento State on March 21 and 22. UCR returns home to host Air Force on Tuesday March 23.
