Shappi, Highlanders Tame Matadors, 7-1

(Apr. 2, 2004) -The UC Riverside baseball team cruised to a 7-1 win over visiting Cal State Northridge on Friday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. The game was the first of two non-conference contests between the teams.

Junior righty A.J. Shappi (6-1) earned his fifth consecutive win, pitching eight innings allowing one unearned run on six hits, striking out seven and issuing no walks.

The Highlanders (19-12) took an early 2-0 lead, but it wasn’t until the fifth that the Matadors (12-18) pitching weakened allowing three runs to come across on four walks and a hit by pitch.

Senior third baseman Tony Festa started the inning with a one-out single off the pitchers foot and advanced to second on a wild pitch. An intentional walk to freshman catcher Nick Salotti and a walk to sophomore shortstop Brian Steinmeyer loaded the bases. The first run of the inning was plated after the next batter was hit by a pitch and two more runs crossed on back-to-back walks, giving UCR a 5-1 lead.

Freshman Cody Campbell (1-1) was able to strike out seven in his 4 2/3 innings of work, but the ball that Festa hit might have take him out of rhythm. Campbell intentionally walking Salotti, hit Barratt and walked Steinmeyer before being relieved by Nathan Hochgesang.

UCR managed two more runs in the seventh while CSUN scored its lone run in the eighth.

The Highlanders managed nine hits with freshman Aaron Grant leading the way with a 3-for-3 day, a run and a pair of RBI. Festa had two hits with a run and a walk.

Cal State Northridge had six hits with Johnny Coit the lone Matador with a multiple-hit game going 2-for-4.

The two-game set concludes Saturday at Northridge. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.

Matadors Rally, Defeat Highlanders 4-3

(Apr. 3, 2004) -After a strong start with nine strikeouts, senior starter John Martinez and the UC Riverside baseball team watched Cal State Northridge's Michael Paulk lift the Matadors ahead, 4-3, and hold on for the win Saturday at Matador Field in non-conference action.

With one out in the eighth and trailing, 3-1, Paulk greeted relief pitcher Marc Rzepczynski with a three-run homer.

Johnny Coit helped start the rally for the Matadors (13-18) with a single. Martinez was able to strike out the next batter, but John Voita sent a single back up the middle, moving Coit up a base and ending the day for Martinez.

Rzepczynski was brought in to face the left-handed swinging Paulk, and surrendered the go-ahead home run.

Again the Highlanders (19-13) started the scoring with a pair in the third inning.

With one down, Tony Festa lined a ball up the middle off CSUN starter Craig Baker. The ball hit the pitcher, and as Baker attempted to retire Festa, he threw wildly to first. Nick Salotti took advantage of the error, as he followed with a two-run home run over the wall in left to give UCR a 2-0 lead.

The Highlanders added another in the top of the fourth with three-consecutive singles.

With one down, Matt Cunningham sent a soft liner into center to send Scott Powis racing into score for a 3-0 advantage.

Northridge responded right back with one run in its portion of the fourth.

Paulk was hit with a one-out pitch and advanced to second on a two-out single by Erik Hagstrom. Adam Fleener followed in the order, sending an RBI-single through the left side to cut the lead to 3-1.

Martinez lasted 7 1/3, striking out nine while walking just one. CSUN's reliever, Eddy Camacho, who entered to start the fourth, retired eight in a row at one point. Phil Polanco picked up his third victory of the season, as he closed out the game after the Matadors ook the lead. Rzepczynski (0-2) took the loss.

Brett Bigler, Louie Hernandez and Festa each had two hits for UCR. The Highlanders outhit the Matadors, 12-8.

Hagstrom led all hitters with his 3-for-4 day. Paulk was the only other Matador with more than one hit, collected a pair.

The Highlanders host Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, April 6 at the Riverside Sports Complex beginning at 6:00 p.m.

UCR Dominates LMU, 12-2

(Apr. 6, 2004) -The UC Riverside baseball team defeated Loyola Marymount, 12-2, Tuesday at the Riverside Sports Complex. The game was over by the end of the second inning when the Highlanders (20-13) led, 7-0. The Highlanders tied a season high with 16 hits, while the Lions (19-3-1) had only six.

Nine Highlanders had at least one hit; five had two hits. Leadoff man Brett Bigler had three hits on the day, while Festa had two, including a homerun to lead off the fourth. But first baseman Kyle Barratt was the standout with a single, two doubles and a pair of RBI. Matt Cunningham scored the winning run in the second inning after Nick Salotti doubled to right center.

Jose Shaw (2-1) earned the win after pitching three innings and giving up only two runs. The Highlanders’ bullpen was stellar today. In six innings of relief they gave up only three hits and no runs. Gabriel Bueno (4-2) picked up the loss.

The Highlanders next series begins Thursday against Cal Poly in the team’s Big West Conference opener beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Riverside Sports Complex.

UCR Opens Big West With 9-3 Loss to Cal Poly

(Apr. 8, 2004) -The UC Riverside baseball team fell, 9-3, to Cal Poly in the first Big West Conference game of the season for both teams Friday night at the Riverside Sports Complex.

The Highlanders (20-14, 0-1 Big West) scored the first run of the game in the second inning, but the Mustangs (29-12-1, 1-0 Big West) battled back with a pair of runs in the fifth and added three more in the next frame to go ahead, 5-2.

Junior starter Jimmy Shull (7-3) struck out eight in seven innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits for the Mustangs. Closer Nolan Moser came in to finish the final two innings, allowing one runs on three hits.

Freshman first baseman Kyle Barratt accounted for two of the three UCR runs on a pair of solo home runs in the second and fifth.

Sophomore Haley Winter (2-3) was charged with the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. The Highlander bullpen allowed four runs on seven hits.

Six Mustangs managed multiple hits off the Highlanders with Sam Herbert and Brandon Roberts each went 3-for-5.

Barratt and fellow freshman designated hitter Louie Hernandez each had two hits for UCR. Barratt also led the team with two runs scored and two RBI.

The three-game series continues on Friday with a 7:00 p.m. start. The game will be broadcast on KPRO (1570 AM), with the pre-game show beginning at 6:50 p.m.

UCR Falls to Cal Poly, 9-5, Despite a Five-Run Ninth Inning

(Apr. 9, 2004) -The UC Riverside baseball team lost to Cal Poly Friday, 9-5, at the Riverside Sports Complex.

The Highlanders (20-15) were stumped by the Mustangs (30-12-1) starter Garrett Olson (7-3), who went eight innings, allowing five hits and no runs. In the ninth, wild Cal Poly reliever, Nick McMillan, walked three and gave up five runs, before reliever Bud Norris finished the job. In two games against the Mustangs, the Highlanders have managed just 14 hits and eight runs.

Highlander first baseman Kyle Barratt continued his hot streak, reaching base twice with a double and a walk. Catcher Nick Salotti had a double and a single.

The Mustangs scored eight runs in the first two innings (seven earned) against Highlander starter A.J. Shappi (6-2), who gave up ten hits in three innings. Jose Shaw relieved Shappi in the fourth, shutting down Cal Poly, allowing only one run and four hits in six innings.

The series concludes Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Riverside Sports Complex.

Highlanders Avoid Sweep with 5-4 Win Over Cal Poly

(Apr. 9, 2004) -The UC Riverside baseball team avoided a sweep and earned their first Big West Conference win of the season with Saturday’s 5-4 win over Cal Poly at the Riverside Sports Complex.

Senior John Martinez earned his sixth win of the season and remains undefeated after pitching 8 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. For the fourth time this season, he did not walk a hitter. Senior Brian Hoff earned his fifth save of the season pitching the final two outs.

In the early innings, it looked like the Highlanders were in for another long afternoon when the Mustangs added a run in the first and second innings to take a quick 2-0 lead.

UCR battled back in its half of the second inning when freshman first baseman Kyle Barratt doubled with one out and was driven home when the next batter, sophomore shortstop Brian Steinmeyer, singled to cut the Mustangs‚ lead in half, 2-1.

The Highlanders took their first lead of the game in the third, adding three runs to lead, 4-2.

Senior third baseman Tony Festa doubled in the first run of the inning and Barratt hit his second double of the game, driving in the final two runs of the inning.

UCR added another run in the fourth on an RBI-single from Festa to lead 5-3, but the Mustangs continued to pressure the Highlanders.

The Mustangs cut the lead to 5-3 when designated hitter Brandon Roberts scored from third on a wild pitch and then added one more in the ninth to cut the deficit to 5-4.

Cal Poly opened the inning with a single off the pitcher’s foot and two batters later with one out, the Mustangs’ Bret Bergland popped a ball up to left center that fell in no-man’s land between four UCR defenders, allowing the runner, Kyle Blumenthal, to advance to third.

With one away and runners on the corners, Martinez was lifted in favor of Hoff.

The first batter Hoff faced grounded to the second baseman and was misplayed allowing Blumenthal to score on the error, but right fielder Aaron Grant made a great play on the miscue and was able to get the ball to third to catch Mayo trying to advance for the second out of the game. Hoff was able to induce a groundout for the final out of the inning to quench the rally.

Festa led the Highlanders with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, scoring a run and driving in three. Barratt went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a pair of RBI and a run scored.

Roberts went 3-for-4 for Cal Poly, driving in a run and scoring another.

Dennis LeDuc (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing the go-ahead run to score in the fourth. LeDuc went just 1 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits in relief of starter Gary Daley who lasted just two innings. Tony Saipe pitched the final 4 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs to score.

The Highlanders return to action next weekend at UC Santa Barbara, beginning Friday, April 16 at 2:00 p.m.

Highlanders Grab 8-6 Win Over Gauchos

(Apr. 16, 2004) -The UC Riverside baseball team secured the win, 8-6, over UC Santa Barbara Friday afternoon in the opening game of a three-game Big West Conference set at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

UCR used three home runs and nine hits to send the Gauchos to only their third loss in the last 15 games. UCSB drops to 23-13 overall and 1-3 in the Big West. UCR is now 22-15 with a 2-2 conference mark.

The Highlanders scored one run in the first when Louie Hernandez's two-out RBI-single scored Matt Cunningham, who had reached on a walk.

But UCSB struck back in its half of the inning as it loaded the bases with the help of two walks and an error. Matt Wilkerson hit a grand slam home run to give the Gauchos a 4-1 lead.

The Highlanders were able to get to Gaucho right-hander Michael Martin early, The sophomore only last one-plus innings, allowing six runs on three hits, including two round trippers. Martin could not make the lead stand up as he surrendered five more runs in the second without recording an out.

After walking the lead-off batter, Aaron Grant socked his second home run of the year to bring UCR to within one, 4-3. After another hit by pitch and a walk, third baseman Tony Festa launched a shot to left-center field which gave the Highlanders a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish.

UCR added a run in the third and an insurance run in the ninth with the Gauchos down by just a run, 7-6. Nick Salotti belted a home run over the right field wall to give UCR a two-run cushion heading into the final half inning of the contest.

UCR starting pitcher Haley Winter, lasted just 4 1/3 innings, and was relieved by Marc Rzepczynski and Jaymie Torres, who combined to allow just four hits and one run over the games final 4.1 innings. Rzepczynski picked up his first win of the year after facing just eight batters from fourth through the sixth innings.

The Gaucho bullpen fared even better, combining to throw the final eight innings allowing just two runs on six hits.

The Gauchos and Highlanders will return to Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. for game two of the series.

Salotti Belts Two Homers in 18-8 Win

(Apr. 17, 2004) - Freshman Nick Salotti hit two of the Highlanders four home runs in Saturday's 18-8 win at UC Santa Barabara. It is UCR's highest run total of the season.

Salotti's homers came in the sixth and ninth innings, increasing his total to nine for the season and finishing the day 5-for-6 with six RBI. Freshmen Louie Hernandez and Kyle Barratt also homered in the win.

The Highlanders (23-15, 3-2 Big West) racked up 20 hits in the game, also a team season-best mark. UCR scored nine earned runs on 10 hits in the first 1 2/3 innings off starter Andy Graham.

The Highlanders posted four runs in the first, five runs in the second, three in sixth, one in the seventh and five more in the ninth inning. Heading into the third inning, the Gauchos already trailed 9-0.

Junior A.J. Shappi (7-2) picked up the win for UCR, tossing a strong seven innings, allowing 14 hits but only six runs. He struck out four and walked two. Three Highlander relievers combined to pitch the final two frames for UCR.

The series concludes on Sunday with the first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.

Highlanders Complete Sweep over UCSB

(Apr. 18, 2004) - Matt Cunningham delivered a one-out run-scoring single in the bottom of the twelfth to guide the UC Riverside baseball team to a 5-3 win on Sunday, giving the Highlanders a three-game sweep over UC Santa Barbara in this weekend's Big West Conference series.

UCR improves to 24-15 and 4-2 in conference play and the Gauchos drop to 23-15 and 1-5 in the Big West.

UCR reliever Jaymie Torres pitched four scoreless innings of one-hit ball to earn his first win of the year. Brian Hoff nailed it down for the Highlanders in the twelfth for his sixth save of the year. Nate Holguin (0-1) suffered the defeat for UCSB after tossing two innings and surrendering two runs on four hits.

The Highlanders scored twice in the twelfth to break a 3-3 tie, when Cunningham plated designated hitter Nick Salotti and was followed two batters later by Scott Powis' RBI single to left center.

Riverside out hit the Gauchos 13-12 while the teams both stranded ten runners on base.

UCSB took an early 1-0 lead when right-fielder Matt WIlkerson dropped an RBI single to right field in the first to plate the Gauchos' leading first run.

But the Highlanders charged back with RBI singles from shortstop Brian Steinmeyer and Powis to get two of their own in the second to take a 2-1 lead. They would never trail again.

The Gauchos tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth when center fielder Brian Adams and catcher Matt Kalafatis teamed up to produce a run. With two down, Adams singled to right center, stole second and then scored when Kalafatis roped a base hit up the middle.

Both teams exchanged a run in the fifth and the score remained knotted at 3-3 until the twelfth.

Powis was the top hitter for UCR, going 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

UCR heads to UNLV for a midweek contest on Tuesday, April 20 and return home to host Cal State Northridge for a three-game Big West set beginning on Friday, April 23.

Shaw Fans 12 in UCR's 7-2 Win at UNLV

(Apr. 20, 2004) - Jose Shaw struck out 12 batters en route to his third win of the season as the UC Riverside baseball team won, 7-2, at UNLV Tuesday evening.

Shaw (3-1) was virtually untouchable as he retired 17 Rebels in a row at one point. The sophomore southpaw allowed just three hits in eight innings, wile picking up 12 strikeouts. It is the second time this season Shaw tallied 10-or-more strikeouts in a win. Earlier against UH Hilo, Shaw fanned a career-best 13 batters.

The win improves the Highlanders to 25-15 overall, while the Rebels drop to 24-14.

The game was scoreless until the Highlanders added four runs in the fourth inning.

Senior second baseman Scott Powis continued with the hot bat, singling in the first run of the inning. Freshman center fielder Matt Lawson added another run on an RBI-double, followed by freshman designated hitter Louie Hernadez' sacrifice fly and junior left fielder Matt Cunningham added the final run on a double.

Lawson added another run in the sixth on an RBI-single and sophomore right fielder Aaron Grant added another in the seventh scoring freshman first baseman Kyle Barratt on a double. Senior Jason Collette homered in the eighth to give UCR a 7-0 lead.

The Rebels were held to just five hits on the night, and finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth adding a pair of runs.

Powis led the Highlander offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two runs and an RBI.

UCR hosts Cal State Northridge for a three-game Big West series at the Riverside Sports Complex beginning Friday, April 23 at 7:00 p.m.

Highlanders Extend Win Streak to Six
After 9-4 Victory over Cal State Northridge

(Apr. 23, 2004) - The UC Riverside baseball team extended its winning streak to six games with a 9-4 victory over visiting Cal State Northridge in a Big West contest Friday night at the Riverside Sports Complex.

Sophomore Haley Winter (3-3) picked up his third win of the season after pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (none earned) on six hits. Freshman Joe Rocchio (1-2) suffered the win for the Matadors, allowing six runs on eight hits in just 4 2/3 innings.

Six Highlanders posted multiple-hit games with freshmen Brett Bigler and Nick Salotti each going 3-for-5. Bigler scored three runs, while Salotti plated one and drove in three more.

First baseman Michael Paulk was perfect at the plate for CSUN, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a base on balls.

The Matadors (13-27, 0-7 Big West) scored the first run of the game in their first at bat, but the Highlanders (26-15, 5-2 Big West) answered with a run of their own to knot the game, 1-1, after the first frame.

UCR took its first lead of the game, 2-1, with a run in the third and pulled ahead with four runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to lead, 7-1.

In the seventh with Matador runners on second and third and one out, senior Jaymie Torres relieved Winter. Torres struggled in the inning, throwing three wild pitches that scored one run in the inning. CSUN added two more in the inning on a sacrifice fly and an RBI-single to cut the lead to 7-4.

UCR battled back with two more in the seventh to take the final 9-4 lead.

Torres was able strike out the side in the eighth and added two more in the ninth to finish with five strikeouts and no walks issued.

The three-game set continues Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. start at the Riverside Sports Complex.

UCR Wins Second Straight Series, Beating Matadors, 9-5

(Apr. 24, 2004) - The UC Riverside baseball team overcame the heat and its opponents, defeating Cal State Northridge, 9-5, Saturday at the Riverside Sports Complex. It’s the seventh straight win for UCR.

The Highlanders (27-15, 6-2 Big West) had another offensive day, knocking in nine runs on fifteen hits. The Matadors (13-28, 0-8 Big West) used five pitchers on the afternoon and all but two gave up at least one run. Nine Highlanders had hits and five of those nine had multiple hits.

UCR started it off right in the first, with Brett Bigler and Matt Cunningham both stealing second and scoring. Tony Festa and Brian Steinmeyer had RBIs in the inning. Steinmeyer was 3-for-5 on the day with two RBI and a run scored. Festa also had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

With the Highlanders leading 3-1 in the top of the fourth, the Matadors battled back, tying the game at three. Taking advantage of a rather wild A.J. Shappi, Matadors’ right fielder John Voita walked and later scored on an Adam Fleener RBI single to right. Designated hitter Luke Riordan, who singled, scored on pinch hitter Chase McGuire’s RBI single through the left side.

The Matadors took the lead in the fifth on a Michael Paulk homer and an unearned run. They led 5-4. But in the bottom of the fifth, with the hot Riverside afternoon sun beating on the field, the Highlanders knocked in four runs to lead 8-5, and added another run in the ninth.

Shappi (8-2) picked up the win, going seven innings of nine hit ball and four earned runs. Matador reliever Nathan Hochgesang (0-5) pitched 2/3 of an inning, giving up four runs and was charged with the loss.

The Highlanders go for the sweep Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Riverside Sports Complex.

UCR Sweeps CSUN With 18-6 Beating

(Apr. 24, 2004) - The UC Riverside baseball team piled the runs up Sunday at the Riverside Sports Complex, sweeping Cal State Northridge, 18-6, and extending their winning streak to eight games.

The Highlanders (28-15, 7-2 Big West) pummeled Matadors’ (13-29, 0-9 Big West) pitching, racking up a season high 22 hits. Shortstop Brian Steinmeyer had the biggest day for UCR, going 6-for-6 with six RBI and two runs scored. Steinmeyer ties a UCR record for hits in a game and he is the third Highlander to go 6-for-6 in school history.

But the Highlanders had more than just Steinmeyer on Sunday. UCR had seven players with hits, including five with multiple hits. Sophomore Nick Salotti went five-for-five on the day with four runs scored and two RBI. Senior Tony Festa was three-for-six with three runs scored and two RBI. Matt Cunningham was three-for-five and had five runs scored.

Senior starting pitcher John Martinez (7-0) went five innings and pitched well through all but the fourth, where the Matadors managed four of their six runs. CSUN starting pitcher Cody Campbell (1-3) went only 2/3 of an inning, giving up three hits and six earned runs.

UCR scored six runs in the first inning and then kept scoring in every inning except the sixth and the seventh. The Highlanders tie their season high run total with 18.

The Highlanders make up their game with USD on Tuesday April 27 at 6:0 p.m. at the Riverside Sports Complex.

 

Smitheran to be an Assistant Coach for 2004 USA Baseball

(Apr. 27, 2004) - USA Baseball has announced today that UC Riverside head coach Jack Smitheran was one of three assistant coaches on the 2004 USA Baseball National Team that will represent the United States at the II FISU World University Baseball Championships in Chinese Taipei, July 22-Aug. 1. Elliott Avent of North Carolina State, and Dave Lawn of Southern California will also serve as assistant coaches assisting 2004 Team USA Field Manager Frank Cruz, who is currently at Loyola Marymount University.

In addition, USA Baseball also announced that Jeff Evans of Arizona State University will serve as the Team Press Officer.

"These coaches each have a unique background and all three have been a part of college baseball at it's highest level," said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball General Manager of National Teams. "We are very fortunate to have their help this summer as we try to capture the collegiate level World Championship."

Smitheran - a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame - returns to USA Baseball after a 32-year absence from the program. The veteran UC Riverside coach also served as an Assistant on the 1971 United States Baseball Team that captured a silver medal at the Pan Am Games in Cali, Columbia. Smitheran recently directed UC Riverside's successful jump from Division II to Division I baseball in 2001, and guided the Highlanders to their first ever NCAA Regional appearance in 2003.

Avent was named the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Coach of the Year after leading North Carolina State to a first-ever NCAA Super-Regional berth (Miami), as the Wolfpack finished up the campaign with a 45-18 record.

Lawn is in his fourth season as the Trojans' pitching coach, and helped Mark Prior capture the 2001 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award during his junior season at USC. This will be the first career USA Baseball coaching experience for Avent & Lawn, as well as the first USA Baseball involvement for Evans.

In June, USA Baseball will invite 36 of the nation's top freshman and sophomore collegiate players to the USA Baseball National Team Trials in Durham. After the team is selected, Cruz will guide Team USA through their second summer of play at their new headquarters in the North Carolina Triangle Region. The 2004 USA Baseball National Team will play a pair of four-game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park - the first against Canada in June and the second against Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) in July.
Team USA will also travel to Japan for their annual five-game series against the Japanese Collegiate All-Stars - the 33rd annual meeting of the two countries - and then return to the United States to play approximately 10 more domestic games before traveling to the FISU World University Championships.

Highlanders' Winning Streak
Over with 16-8 Loss

(Apr. 27, 2004) - The UC Riverside baseball team ended their eight game winning streak with a 16-8 loss to the University of San Diego, Tuesday at the Riverside Sports Complex. USD has won all three meetings this season.

The Highlanders (28-16) fell behind 8-0 by the third inning and couldn’t muster a big enough comeback against the Toreros (26-19). UCR starter Jose Shaw (3-2) was roughed up and only lasted 2.1 innings, allowing four earned runs. Taylor Bills relieved Shaw in the third and seemed to be the only answer against USD, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing three hits and no runs.

In the bottom of the third the Highlanders mounted a comeback, knocking in four runs to cut the lead to 8-4. They added two more runs in the next three innings, while shutting down the Toreros and bringing the score to 8-6, but it was the closest they would come. In the top of the eighth USD scored five runs, putting the game out of reach for the Highlanders.

Brian Steinmeyer ended his streak of reaching base safely at nine with a groundout in the seventh inning. After going 6-for-6 Sunday, he started Tuesday off with a double, was hit by pitch, and then a single.

The Highlanders gave up a season high 21 hits to USD hitters.

Shaw picked up the loss for the Highlanders while USD relief pitcher Sean Warlop (2-1) earned the win.

The Highlanders go on the road to face Pacific for a three game set beginning Friday April 30 at 3:00 p.m.

 

Tigers Outlast Highlanders in 10-9 Loss

(Apr. 27, 2004) - The UC Riverside baseball team managed nine runs on only five hits, but were unable to hold on in a 10-9 loss at Pacific Friday evening in a Big West Conference game.

The Tigers (17-24, BWC 2-8) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead , but the Highlanders (28-17, 7-3 Big West) added two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to cut the deficit to 8-6 after five.

Pacific tacked on two more with single runs in the sixth and seventh, while UCR added a lone run in the seventh and its final two runs in the eighth.

The Highlanders were unable to tie or take the lead in the final at bat, with the Tigers retiring the top of the order to secure the win.

Sophomore Haley Winter was charged with the loss, falling to 3-4 on the season. Erik Barbic (1-0) recorded the win in relief in of starter Eric Stolp.

No Highlander managed more than one hit in the game, but three recorded two RBI's and three managed to cross the plate twice.

Freshman Brett Bigler was hitless in the contest, but reached base on four walks and plated three runs.

UC Riverside will look to get back on track Saturday as the teams square off again on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
