(Oct.
23, 2007) - The UC Riverside 2008 recruiting class has been
named the 25th best in the nation by Baseball America.
15 student-athletes make up the list of newcomers for the
Highlanders as they prepare to defend their Big West Conference
title.
“We are very happy with our incoming class. It was a
critical year for us after losing so many players to the draft
and to graduation. Receiving a top-25 ranking is a significant
step for us to continue to grow as a program,” Head
Coach Doug Smith said.
Among the leaders of the incoming class looking to make immediate
impacts for the Highlanders are 2007 Riverside County Player
of the Year and 37th round pick of the Rangers, freshman right-handed
pitcher B.J. Salsbury (San Jacinto, CA/ San Jacinto HS), sophomore
left-handed pitcher Paul Bargas (Riverside, CA/ University
of Arizona), freshman right-handed pitcher and 31st round
pick of White Sox, Eddie Orozco (Riverside, CA/ Patriot HS).
Freshman catcher and Phillies 34th round pick, Brett Hambright
(Elsinore, CA/ Temescal Canyon HS), along with Pirates 44th
rounder, freshman right-handed pitcher Dustin Emmons (La Crescenta,
CA/ Crescenta Valley HS) round out the group of newcomers
also ranked 38th by Collegiate Baseball.
The team is currently taking part in their fall workouts and
concludes their Fall season with their Blue-Gold World Series
towards the end of November.
Smith announced that the UCR Alumni game is set for 1 p.m.
on November 10th at the UCR Baseball Complex. Alumni looking
for more information should contact the UCR baseball office
at 951-827- 5441.
